As soon as they come out of the oven, you may want to run a knife around the edges to make for easy removing later. Cool completely before removing from the tin, running a knife around the edge to help loosen.

the chocolate tasty is so nice in it, I love it :)

  5. Karlijn

I’ve tried these and they were amazing! I loooved the gooey choclate, delicious! My dough was pretty fluid, not really like dough but more like batter, does anyone know what I can do about that? In a muffin tin it’s no problem but on a baking sheet it flows everywhere. Thank you

  6. Cashone

  7. Ali

    Hi!
    These look delish.
Do you think I can make them in ramekins and serve them in the ramekins? Will the cooking time be the same?
    Thanks!
    Ali

  8. Mia

Wow looks so delicious!! I am planning to make this but would want just one serving at a time, for those emergency sweet cravings.. Would it be alright to refrigerate or freeze the cookie and then bake one at a time while still frozen?

  9. Mina Winchester

I just made these with Nutella instead of melted chips- It was amazing! Definitely bringing these to thanksgiving. Thanks :)

  10. alex

hello – these look amazing! question – i want to make these for a Christmas party i am hosting. any chance you think its okay to assemble them and stick in fridge and then bake when ready? thx!

  11. Elaine (BreatheEatLive)

Holy BaJeebus!!! This looks idyllic! So yummy I want to swim in it! Nice alternative to just a regular molten chocolate cake =)

  12. kathryn

hi, i have a question. is it okay if i mix the ingredients without the mixer, or will it give different results? ty

  13. Laura

OMG! These are divine. I absolutely CANNOT wait to try making them this weekend! And I’m stuck at home with a sore back so this is going to be perfect!

  14. Angela

Angela them and was not nearly as happy as I had hoped. I was hoping for more of a oozing lava cake by it wasn’t gooey enough for me, actually it wasn’t gooey at all. Not sure if I overcooked them but I followed the recipe perfectly. I won’t make them again, but if I did I’d use semi-sweet chips and more chocolate for the middles. On the other hand, as a cookie, they were very good.

    1. Laura

It looks like they actually added more melted/gooey-fied chocolate after the baking process. I’ve purchased a couple of pre-made lava cakes before in the store, and they have an extra packet for the gooeyness that you add while you heat it up. Hope you would try these again sometime!

  15. Leticia walker

Just tired them today and they were awesome ! I want to eat them everyday!!! Yum! I used store bought cookies and Hershey’s chocolate chips.

  16. gina

These did not turn out well for me. I am a seasoned baker and rarely have milk chocolate chips on hand and was searching for the right recipe to use them. This looked great. But i didn’t get the lava effect. Just a clump of chocolate in the middle. Maybe i should have added chocolate in the center extra???

  17. theultimatefoodaddict

This looks so good! I couldn’t help saying awwww…. as I browsed through the post. This is the kind of stuff that can make all hearts melt.

  18. Zeleia

I made these just now. My entire family has expressed their undying love for me. So, so delicious and incredibly easy to put together. Thank you!

  19. Isha

I made one of these just right now and my kids went crazy over them. Now they are demanding for more. Thank you for this recipe, my kids now love me more.

  20. Ashley

have you ever made them w/fudge (hersey’s fudge ice cream topping or something similar) instead of melted chocolate chips in the middle?

  21. Keelin

I just made these! This is the best cookie recipe I have tried yet! Definitely a keeper for me. I haven’t even tried it with the ice cream yet. That’s next!
    Thank you!

  22. Tina

I tried this recipe last night and it was SO good. I am diabetic, so I substitued Coconut Palm Sugar for the sugars and they turned out fantastic! I will absolutely put this recipe in my favorites. Thank you for a wonderful recipe!

  23. m-bakes

I made this today but when i cut it open, there was no lava, never the, less it tastes amazing, but do you know why that happened and how to not let it happen again, would really appreciate it <3

  24. Terry Jackson

Amanda, thanks so much for the recipe. I cant wait to try this out on my large family of about 12-15 people at our traditional Sunday dinner. I have two questions.
    1. I like to do a lot prepping first so I was wondering if I made the cookie dough 1-2 days in advance what could I do to store it and make sure it is still moist and fresh when its time to bake?
    2. I notice you used a small muffin pan is it possible I could use a larger pan to produce bigger lava cookies? And would this mess up the cooking time?
    Thanks in advance

  25. Annamaria Settanni McDonald

You are amazing and so bad at the same time! There is no way to resist making these or any of your decadent treats. My husband too loves anything Ala Mode! Thank you for sharing all your recipes! This is a perfect recipe to kill anyone with kindness! =)

    Warmest Regards,
    Annamaria

  26. Molten Chocolate

    Hey
I tried to make this but the cookies get overdone at the top and remain completely gooey at the bottom. Any suggestions?

    1. Emily

I had the opposite problem. By the time mine were done on top, the chocolate in the middle had completely baked in–no gooey inside–and the bottoms were overdone. (Baked in a preheated 350 oven for 15 minutes.) If I try it again, I’ll probably leave them underdone.

  27. Carol Anthon

These are a hit in our home!!!! I use nuttella in the center… oh my goodness
The only thing I will do different next time is double the recipt!!! 12 is not enough

  28. MikeyP

OMG,I must try your Lava cookies. Your pics makes you want to stick your finger
right into the screen. You make the recipe look so easy.

  31. Irene

How can you do this to me! I’ve put weight on just reading this but am rushing out to buy said ingredients so I can get baking! If possible I’ll make them at Messy Church but it depends on timing.

  32. Kami D.

omigawd are you TRYING to kill me?! i just came from the Londoner blog about slutty brownies and now this?! im gonna end up with these recipes having been my murderer. and i would have died with a smile…

  33. Nisha

Stumbled upon this page. Cookies made in muffin pan, wow. Cookies with gooey chocolate center, wow. I really like this. I’m going to try this with my eggless chocolate chip cookie dough recipe!

  34. Jennifer M.

I never thought to take my standard cookie dough and turn it into something so sensational! Great technique – thanks.

It’s my first time visiting your blog, and I’m really enjoying it. Off to another page…

  35. Ansh

These were so good. I tried them and they are super easy to make. I had to get my hands a little dirty and mix cause the batter was thick. Totally loved it in the cookie version…will try it in the muffin version real soon. Love! Love! Love!

  36. liaM

I just made them…how long do I have to wait to eat them?!!!! BTW, I LOVE your photos, I wish you could have photographed my pistachio and chocolate macaroons!!

    1. liaM

UPDATE: Couldn’t wait any longer… we all loved them, and they came out perfect, just like your pictures…got exactly 12, 3 for each one of us.

  37. Patricia Deal

The cookie recipe looks really good but i noticed there was no baking powder in the recipe do you not need it with all purpose flour. just checking before i make them thanks.

  38. Lacy @ NYCityEats

Oh my gawddd! These look super yummy!! So going to try these out. I can already tell this recipe is going to be a winner!!

I know everyone will love them…..will definitely make these again, especially for a summer recipe around the pool!

  40. Sue

Your pictures are fantastic! Made my mouth water just looking. I think I will try them with a few of the filling suggestions like nutella, hot fudge, and the chocolate chips. They all sound so good!

  41. Lisa @ A Little Slice of Life

Oh I wish I read this before I made chocolate chip cookies yesterday. I think next time these are a must try. So simple.

  42. Tanya Sachdev

Yummy…the elaborate explanation of the recipe with pictures is great..i ll surely make this mouth watering cookie.

  43. Tim

Made these cookies last night. So easy and so good.
Added peanut butter into some of the fillings. Definitely going to do a whole batch that way!
Trying the peanut butter nutella icecream tonight.

  44. lauren

Has anybody made these successfully yet? Just curious what the results were….my batter was a little runny and I didn’t have enough to make 10. Had to rescoop some back in to cover the tops of some. They are baking now so I’m nervous….

  45. Daniii

100000% i’m gonna make some now. In fact my stomach is growling as I speak…..
gonna whip up some yummy munchies now :3

  46. Kaja

Hi! These were so delicious!! I only had a small problem with the dough being very…crumbly (?) when I took them out of the oven. I followed the recipe exactly and don’t understand what I did wrong. Do you have any tips on what to do different next time?

    Thanks! I love your blog!!

  47. Kristina

Omygoodness I am obsessed with this recipe!! I just made these and they are amazing! I warmed mine up in the microwave and topped with ice-cream, just like your picture…. and o man… yum!! I’m so happy I found you on pinterest, you have the most delicious recipes on here!

  48. Macaroni and Cheesecake

  50. danielle

These look awesome! I wanted to let you know that I featured these on my “What I Bookmarked This Week” post today – stop by and see!

  51. Samantha

My husband and I just made a batch of these tonight. This is probably the best desert I’ve EVER had. I can’t believe how easy they were. They turned out perfectly! Thank you so much for this recipe!

  52. Lisa @ A Little Slice of Life

Oh. I’m in heaven, or maybe diabetic shock, either way I am making theses soon. Thanks for the inspiration!

  53. Ieasha Akins

Hey Amanda I tried these for my sister and her family and they absolutely loved it (so did I) !! Thanks for the awesome recipe!

  54. Alison

This looks amazing! However, I’d like to recommend melting that chocolate in a glass bowl in the microwave. Plastic bags leach plastics into food, especially anything acidic or fatty (chocolate). Nobody wants to eat plastic, especially since it also makes it more likely that those scrumptious goodies will stick firmly to your middle.
I can’t wait to give these a try!

  55. BethDanielNefertariParisaNataliaStephenArielLiaAlex

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS RECIPE! We are all college students and this made our friday night!! :D :D :D

  58. Kathalene

I’ve never made lava cookies but I did attempt a Hot Chocolate Souffle once that didn’t turn out well…but it did make a delicious Lava cake with vanilla ice cream :)

  59. Sarah@afterhood

Yum! My family is already half in love with Molten Chocolate Lava Cakes, so I am going to test these chocolate chip lava cakes on them! Great photo How-To as well.

  60. Haley Jacobson

I made these tonight and they didn’t get cooked all the way through. I put them back in the oven and they got burnt on the top. I followed your instructions! What did I do wrong?

    1. Alison

Your oven may not be heating evenly. Could be that you need to place the rack lower in your oven as it sounds like more heat may be coming from the top.

  61. Callie

Everything you make looks delicious! Can I please be your taste tester ;) I will be making your Easy Homemade Ice Cream without a Machine recipe tonight! Thanks for all the yummy recipes.

  62. Meghan @JaMonkey

I had one of these at Red Lobster the other day and it was the best thing I’ve ever had. So glad I found this! Pinned it!

  63. Melford McRae

Ok I wanted to try this when I first saw it post but now after having made the I have become a fan, it looked easy enough simple ingredients and now I’m a rockstar to the kids thanks Kevin and Amanda.

  64. Katie Kowalsky

    Yummm! Thanks for sharing!
This is such a great idea. I love all the new inventive ways peeps are coming up with these days for mixing cooking tools. I can definitely think of a few ways cookie cups could be dabbled with ;-)

  65. Agus

    Hola!!
Estoy haciendo la receta :) solo cambie el relleno de chocolate, por dulce de leche!!

These look beyond amazing!! Thank you for sharing!! Do you mind if I add this recipe to my blog? I will be sure to give you credit and link your blog to my post. Let me know…Thanks again!

  67. Rhi

So, can you pop these in the microwave later to melt the chocolate again if you don’t eat them immediately? Or will the chocolate stay soft?

  68. Javelin Warrior

Your cookies look incredible! I love the concept of using a muffin tin to make these… I have featured this post in today’s Friday Food Fetish roundup. Let me know if you have any objections and thanks for the inspiration

  69. jayme

I have been looking for a molten lava chocolate chip cookie recipe for so long, and yours looks delicious. I will definitely be trying it out! :)

  70. Julie B.

other than melting chips in a PLASTIC bag–I’ll have to give this recipe a try.
after all, there is no such thing as too much chocolate!

  71. Mimi

These look SO good! I can’t wait to make them. Question though, a 10 oz bag of chocolate chips is equal to 1 and 1/4 cups I believe. So if we use 1/2 cup for the molten lava center, we would have 3/4 cup remaining for the dough, right? It says 1 cup will be left over in the directions, so I wanted to clarify just in case that was an error :)

    1. Amanda

You’re right, Mimi! The Hershey’s milk chocolate bags are actually 11.5 oz, not 10 oz. I’ll change that right now! :) For me it worked out just right — 1/2 cups for the molten lava center and just a tad more than 1 cup leftover for the cookies. :)

  72. Adele Forbes

Wow..this has made me want to lick my screen, now that is the first time I ever said that! Thank you so very much for sharing!

  73. Kimberly Hurd

I get your posts through my email and for some reason I can’t pin from them? Any reason why? I want to pin these yummy things (Which I am making on my “free day” sunday) Please help, I would love to make sure I can always track this recipe. Thanks for the help.

  74. Betsy

These look amazing! But, I have one question. I do not have a microwave. Do you now how I could melt the chocolate on the stove top?

    1. Julie B.

put chips in a metal bowl that fits inside ( but not to bottom of) one of your pots. fill bottom of pot– up the sides of the bowl a bit– with water. heat over med high, stirring constantly. best if the bowl has a lip to hold it up on the edge of the pot.
this is otherwise known as (& sold at a high price as a set in stores as ) a double boiler.
the trick is to heat the water in the pot so it melts the choc in the bowl– w/o getting any water in the choc, or boiling pot dry.

  75. june

These look great! will be pinning it for later! I just got back from the gym so now will have something to keep working for on my free day!

  76. Texsanb

Tried these tonight, usually things I see on other peoples blogs don’t turn out for me, but these turned out PERFECT!! Thanks for the great recipe–so yummy!

  77. Jodi

This is the only time I am thankful my oven is not working! I would make this and eat them ALL! Yummy! The only problem will be when it gets fixed and I go crazy baking and eating!! Treadmill, here I come…

  78. Barbara | Creative Culinary

Talk about over the top…this is it certainly. My daughter is in her 20’s and would take this over a birthday cake any day.

I do have one concern though…you refer to a cookie dough by another blogger. You mean the same recipe I’ve used for years? That’s a pretty standard recipe, I don’t see how it could actually be attributed to anyone; way too generic in my book.

  79. christina @ ovenadventures

i’m such a huge sucker for chocolate chip cookies already and then you do this. amazing. you always want to make me eat the screen.

  80. Casey L.

My husband and I sometimes stop at Red Lobster just to have these for dessert! I’ve been trying to figure out how to make them for years!! So thank you! He’s gonna have one good Valentine’s Day surprise without a trip to Red Lobster. :)

  81. Jeanette

WOW, those look amazing! I just showed my husband and he said “man, she comes up with some good recipes!” :) I can’t wait to make these, thanks for sharing!

  82. T

Oh YUM. Chocolate chip cookies and ice cream. Two perfect ingredients together. I just gained 5 lbs drooling over these. They look so yummy. I am going to put this on my Valentine’s Day dinner menu. Thanks!!

    1. Samantha

Please don’t think you can’t enjoy amazing treats like this in a dairy-free way! My son has life-threatening food allergies to dairy, peanut, and egg and I have not found a dessert yet that I can’t replicate or imitate in a way that is both safe for him and yummy for everyone (no one even notices they’re vegan unless I tell them). There are delicious dairy-free chocolate chips as well as dairy-free buttery spreads suitable for baking. Oh yea, even delicious non-dairy ice creams out there to top it off. I will definitely be making a dairy-free version of these ASAP.

  83. Jaan

Hey, no fair, I’m trying to loose weight not add to it. LOL have to say these look amazing, and would be perfect for that special little treat once in awhile. I’m getting ready to forward this recipe to my brother as he is a chocolate cookie crazy fan. THANKS.

  84. Emilie

anything with gooey chocolate in the middle is a total win in my book. And I’m definitely with ya-that extra cookie dough would go right into my mouth :)

  85. Heather (Heather's Dish)

looks so innocent on the outside and then BAM! the lava comes out…i better hide this one from my hubby or he’ll expect them tonight :)

  86. The Mrs @ Success Along the Weigh

I made something similar with muffin top pans and solid chocolates in the middle and they turned out amazing! I guess I’ll have to give these a try to see which method is better. Research calories don’t count right?

  87. Ms. Sew N Sew

Wow! Does anyone know the calorie count in these bad boys?..guess u could just eat cookies for a day, who’s in? LOL. Definitely gonna try this one thanks Amanda.

  88. Liz (Little Bitty Bakes)

Ohhh yes! I’m a sucker for anything chocolate chip. How good do these look! Imagine some Nutella in the middle of one of those :)

  89. Vintage Papers

I have to admit that I gain some serious weight since I started to read your blog. I am completely addicted to your recipes (and photos!): something with chocolate and more chocolate with chocolate on top of the chocolate :)
Keep them coming, I will start to workout some other day.

  90. Gerty

I was just thinking how it must be time to bake some choc chip cookies. Hello presto! I’m so not gonna bake just any choc chip cookie now. This I gotta try (on Thursday when both my kids are at school and preschool!!!). Thanks!

    1. judit paton

Yes, how fun would that be! :) I have been wanting to try a peanut butter cookie with chocolate in the middle… And a chocolate cookie with peanut butter in the middle! :)

  92. Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga

Amanda they look soooo good! I love Jenny’s dough, too. It gives great results and I love that you made these in a muffin tin. Last week I made some deep dish chocolate chip cookies in my whoopie pie pans but they were “single layer”. Love that you doubled yours up, with that hot fudge sauce in the middle. Swoon!
