Where to Stay in Cape San Blas: Barrier Dunes

On Wednesday I shared a few photos from our beach getaway to Cape San Blas, Florida for Kevin’s birthday. If you missed them, go take a peek now!! :) I wanted to share a few more photos of where we stayed in case you might be considering a visit to Cape San Blas in the future. We loved our little home away from home at the beach!

We stayed at Barrier Dunes Vacation Rentals in the Pelican View condo. Our condo was the fourth from the left in the above picture — the one that’s jutted out further than the two beside it — and has a red umbrella on the bottom balcony. Each condo is 4 floors, so we had all three beachfront balconies in that unit.

I am standing on the beach taking this photo, so that is how close you are to the beach. Steps away! :)

The main floor of the condo featured the living room, dining room, kitchen, and guest bath. The living room looked straight into the ocean. Loved being able to sit in here and watch the waves while checking email. (There was free WiFi in the condo!) The living room was also stocked with family-friendly movies to watch, a VCR and DVD player, and books to read on the beach.

Here was our view from the main floor balcony. To the left (just outside of the frame) are stairs leading down to the beach and a private outdoor hose and shower. To the right was a grill, if you wanted to grill out your fresh catch of the day at the beach. :)

Here is the view looking the other way in the living room. You can see the dining room and kitchen, which comes stocked with all the basic cooking supplies: pots, pans, plates, glasses, utensils, paper towels, and even a full spice rack for cooking your “catch of the day”.

The first floor foyer below comes in from the carport. Each Barrier Dunes condo accommodates covered parking for two cars.

Up the stairs to the third floor was two guest bedrooms (each with their own private ensuite bathroom) and a laundry room. With 3 bedrooms (1 king, 1 queen, 2 twins) and 3.5 baths, this condo would be perfect for sharing with friends! Each condo at Barrier Dunes is uniquely decorated, but most of the floor plans are similar. You can check the Barrier Dunes Vacation Rentals page for photos and floor plans of each unit.

Loved this cute kids room! It had it’s own balcony too. :)

And finally on the fourth floor was the master bedroom and ensuite bath.

This was the view from our balcony. Loved waking up to this every morning!

Okay. I loved this so much I had to take a picture. There was even a little coffee maker in the bedroom. You could get up, make coffee, and take it out on the balcony all without having to go downstairs. I could spend all morning up here just sitting on the balcony and watching the waves!

We saw glimpses the gorgeous, beachfront swimming pool, but we couldn’t drag ourselves away from the beach so I didn’t get a photo, lol!

A few of the other Barrier Dunes Amenities include:

  • 2 Pools – One is direct gulf front overlooking the ocean. One pool is solar heated!
  • Lighted Tennis Courts
  • Playground
  • 3 Fresh Water Ponds – Great for Feeding the Turtles and Fishing
  • Safe, Family Friendly, Gated Community
  • Pet Stations Throughout Barrier Dunes
  • Lots of Grassy Area for Kids and Dogs
  • Boat Washing Area
  • Boardwalks Throughout
  • Just Outside the Gates to St. Joseph Peninsula State Park

They condos were even stocked with extra amenities just for pets:

  • Dog towels
  • Food bowl
  • Pet stations throughout Barrier Dunes to keep our neighborhood and beaches clean and make it easy for you

Here’s a list of the full amenities provided in each Barrier Dunes Vacation Rental.

We couldn’t have asked for a nicer place to stay!

Thanks for the tour of your wonderful get away weekend (Happy Birthday Kevin)! We are heading to Florida this winter and this is exactly the place we would love to stay. Thanks again – Julie

This place is gorgeous! Just what we are looking for on our next vacation getaway! Can you tell me which specific unit this is so we can try and request it? Everything about it is perfect! Always nice to know exactly what you are getting! Thanks! PS. I LOVE looking at all the pictures you post. Amazing! And I don’t know how you stay so thin eating all those wonderful deserts ;)

Jenn September 13, 2013 at 10:16 am

Oops, Pelican View room, whoops, sorry :)

Cindy September 13, 2013 at 9:34 am

Thanks for sharing the beautiful pictures! Based on your experience, we are looking at this for a possible stay. We have always avoided the beaches with crowds and high rises so this looks perfect! Can you share anything about what you did while there? For example, did you just cook meals or go out? It looks like a fair drive to most restaurants. Also, did you do any activities around the area? If you just laid on the beach, I understand, but I was curious. Thank you! :)

Amanda September 13, 2013 at 11:40 am

Hi Cindy! We just laid out on the beach, lol! :) We heard there were lots of of other things to do like scalloping, kayaking, the lighthouse, antiquing in cute nearby towns like Apalachicola and St. George Island, but we were total beach bums. :) Here’s another list of Things to Do in Cape San Blas. We brought cereal for breakfast in the condo, then we’d usually have our big meal for lunch, during the hottest part of the day when we really didn’t want to be outside anyway. We’d go into Port St. Joe (about 30 min drive) every day to eat. I’ll be doing another post about where we ate! :) Then that way we’d be back on the beach in the late afternoon and evening, when the weather was much nicer, and we’d get to see the sunset every night. :) For dinner we’d usually just have something light from the condo, like a sandwich, or sometimes we were so stuffed from lunch we’d just have s’mores on the beach! :) You can bring stuff from home, but we just bought all our food and everything after we got down there from the grocery store about 5 mins down the road from the condo. It had all the necessities. :) Hope this helps! :)

One of our favorite vacation spots, and we stay at Barrier Dunes too! LOVE it. There is not much to do, but that is what I enjoy the most – it is a real vacation with lots of time on the beach! Loved all of your pics and it makes me want to go back down there soon!! Glad you had such a nice vacation!

As always, your photos are absolutely stunning. It looks like Paradise. The Pelican View condos look like a great place for a family vacation, including fur babies.

Beautiful room, beautiful view. Miley and Howie look like a postcard or a Corona commercial. Super sweet!

This is great. I’ve been looking for a cool pet friendly place on the East coast!

We love your pictures. We are planning a trip to Cape San Blas in a couple of months. Just wondering if the Baarier Dunes complex is near the St. Joe State Park. We were there several years back and were amazed at how uncrowded the beaches were in this area. We are also planning on bringing our dog. Will be her first time at the beach, should be fun.

I invite you to come to the Hamptons of the south which just happens to be three beautiful mountain lakes surrounded by the Chattoochee National Park and the Sumpter National Forest through which runs the Chatooga River where you can participate in breathtaking views while navigating serious white water. Also found here are two horseback riding areas for camping with horses and many other simply gorgeous forrest trails to ride that are not heavily traveled. I don’t have room to mention all of the waterfalls that are in the immediate area of this NE corner of Georgia that touches a gorgeous part of South Carolina. I live here and take advantage of all these opportunities while realizing that I live about as close as you can get to heaven without dying! Your target area for reaching this area would be the town of Clayton. Ther are many very nice home on the lakes for rentals. For info check Lake Burton, Seed Lake, and Lake Rabun. I’d be glad to help you find things if you should come our way sometime. Loved you Cape San Blas pages.

Thank you so much for posting the pictures of your beautiful dogs having fun running in ocean…unleashed. My husband and I have been searching for a place in Florida to take our big dogs to run in ocean, but have met with so many rules and regulations, (dogs leashed at all times). And until I saw your pictures , our vacation was pretty much not going to happen. We are traveling for the first time in a RV (from Minnesota where our dogs love the lakes) so want to make sure they have the opportunity to run in water. Again, thanks for lifting my hopes!!
