My Favorite Dry Shampoo

Honestly the best dry shampoo ever. Smells great, doesn't leave a residue, and genuinely makes my hair look clean on non-wash days.

For as long as I can remember I’ve always had oily, fine, limp hair. While the styles have changed over the years — I’ve had long hair, medium hair, and very, very short hair — the texture of my hair has never changed. It’s always been thin, greasy, and definitely slick against my head, especially at the roots. I always thought I needed to wash my hair every day, but the more I washed it, the oilier it got, and the daily blow drying wasn’t doing anything for my frizzy ends. Basically, my hair was a lifeless hot mess.

When I was in high school the thing to do was use baby powder in your hair. I tried that for awhile, but honestly? It smelled like baby powder. And it looked like baby powder too. After awhile I wised up and used cornstarch, and I loved that it didn’t have a scent, but it was also pretty impossible to evenly distribute through my hair and roots, so I gave up on it too after awhile and again resigned myself to washing my hair every day. Or looking like a giant grease bomb. ;)

A few years ago dry shampoo burst onto the scene, and I was eager to give this new product a shot. I tried several brands and they were all pretty fine. They made my hair slightly less oily. Not perfect, but I could get by one extra day without washing, and that was good enough for me.

A few months ago I was about to hop on a plane and was only bringing a carry-on with me, so I needed to find a travel-sized bottle of dry shampoo. I stopped by a Walgreens on the way to the airport and grabbed the only travel-sized dry shampoo they had: a pink bottle of Batiste in the Floral & Flirty Blush scent. I was a little nervous at first since I’d never used it, but it was really either that or do without so I bit the bullet and plunked down my credit card.

Honestly the best dry shampoo ever. Smells great, doesn't leave a residue, and genuinely makes my hair look clean on non-wash days.

The result? I immediately fell in love and haven’t used anything since. It smells great, doesn’t leave a residue, and genuinely makes my hair look clean and freshly washed. It doesn’t just do “okay” — my hair honestly looks like it has just been washed. And it feels that way too. The difference is like night and day. I can go from oily and lifeless to clean, bright, and volumized in just a few sprays. It really makes my hair look clean and soft and thick. It gives my roots added volume. And it makes my hair smell fresh and clean! I no longer have to wash my hair every single day like I would normally need to. And my hair is so much healthier now without the daily blow drying! I can go the longest between washings with this dry shampoo — I now usually only need to wash it every third day.

Here’s how I use it: I run my fingers through my hair, lift up at the roots, and spray the dry shampoo generously throughout my roots. I do this at both temples and at my part. Then I brush it just a little to evenly distribute. You can also use it at night before you go to bed to wake up with oil-free hair in the morning.

I haven’t tried them all, but the Blush and Fresh are my two favorite scents so far.

Honestly the best dry shampoo ever. Smells great, doesn't leave a residue, and genuinely makes my hair look clean on non-wash days.

Here’s a store locator where you can buy it, or buy it online here. I’ve seen it Walgreens, Kroger, and Ulta. I never thought I’d find an inexpensive, drugstore dry shampoo that works so well! If you have greasy hair, try Batiste dry shampoo and discover the joys of a non-wash day! :) I never knew what that was like before. :)

Have a great day! :) xoxo

Wanna know what’s crazy? I bought this stuff about a year ago and it’s been sitting un-used in my bathroom cabinet and just the other day I thought I should give it a whirl (finally)! And now that I know you love it, okay, I need to try it!

I first tried this in England about 5 years ago and have been super obsessed ever since. I love using the pink one and also the brunette colored one- my sister uses the blonde one and loves it too! Seriously I don’t know where I would be without batiste!

Identify completely with baby-fine hair that looks like it needs to be washed every day, which then means using a hair dryer and a curling iron every day, too (so jealous of women who can let their hair dry by itself and it looks good!). Tried the dry shampoos from 20+ years ago and they were awful–looked and felt like I had greasy hair with powder in it. I feel like I’m “giving up” when I wear a ball cap all day, but it’s the only way I can appear in public if I decide to take a day off from a shampoo. I’m desperate enough to give this a try!

I have the same issues with my hair. I wonder if it is sold here in Ontario, Canada.

Yes, it is! Try winners – they sometimes stock it in the mini-sized bottles in 3-packs. Also, I’ve heard Shoppers stocks it, but try to find one of the new big ones. The smaller ones (like the ones in malls) don’t carry it. It’s hands-down the best dry shampoo I’ve ever used! :)

Oh man, I remember busting out the baby powder in high school! This looks like some good stuff to keep on hand.

Amanda:

You are a wealth of knowledge. I have the same kind of limp greasy hair that you describe and hate washing my hair so frequently. I am definitely going to try this. Thanks for the heads-up.

Apparently we are hair twins. If I don’t wash/blow dry everyday, it looks gross. I have tried other dry shampoos and they don’t seem like they do anything. So now I’ll be dragging the 3 year old around the county looking for this today! With a greasy pony tail.

Oh my gosh, I so do the cornstartch thing. I use a large sized makeup powder brush to dust it into my roots. I will have to give these bad boys a try (once they arrive via the mail bc I live in the middle of nowhere convenient Maine (no Walgreens, Kroger, or Ulta here) hehe). :)

I have the same hair problems as you and have been searching for the perfect dry shampoo. The best I’ve found so far is Got2Be, but it’s still just OK. I will definitely try out this kind. Thank you for the recommendation!!

Thank you so much for this post! I have a daughter who has several health issues that make hair-washing a problem at our house. I am going to go find this to see if this will help us on those days when it just isn’t gonna get washed. :)

Have I been living under a rock? How have I not heard of dry shampoo before? The way you describe your hair is exactly the way I describe mine- daily shampooer here! Looks like I’ll be going out to Walgreens today. The excitement I have over the thought of not needing to shampoo and blow dry my hair every single day is a little ridiculous! :)

I too have thin hair. Recently I read the recommendation to use Dry Shampoo as your hairspray if you have thin hair. I’ve tried it and have been super impressed. I use dry shampoo when my hair needs it for oil control, but also on “fresh” days when I finish styling it (for a bit of volume).

Thanks for the recommendation! I just happened to be going to Kroger this morning and picked up a can. You are so right! Better than any I have tried! And my husband just called to see if I wanted to go to lunch.. so you saved the day since I hadn’t gotten around to washing it this morning ;).

This is the first dry shampoo I ever tried and I love it, but for some reason the Sally’s near me stopped selling it! So I started buying different kinds… I will have to check my Walgreens to see if they have it! Blush is my favorite

I’ve always wanted to try dry shampoo, maybe I’ll try this one. I also have thin, fine hair – but my issue is that when I wake up in the morning, I have a raging case of BEDHEAD! My hair is usually sticking up and at weird angles all over the place. I have some cowlicks on the back of my head that contribute to this, so I always assumed that dry shampoo wouldn’t work for me. Anyone have this as well and can vouch that dry shampoo helps and works?!

Thanks for the tip! I found this on Amazon.com where I buy everything I possibly can. It’s just so much easier than going to a store or stores and hunting something down. Anyway, a full sized can of the Fresh is $8.98 with free shipping. Looking forward to giving it a try! Woohoo.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have fine, (naturally) blonde hair (but a lot of it) that gets oily sooo easily (sometimes even 12 hours after washing it). I kept asking every hairstylist as to what I should use so that I don’t have to shampoo every day and no one ever had any good recommendations. Recently, I’ve been using Wen and that kind of helps, but still it’s not great. I’m so jealous of the women whose hair looks better the next day, while mine looks like a stringy, oily mess. I’m definitely going to go out and buy this asap!

Well, I don’t have this issue, but I’m just wondering……my grand daughter has very oily hair and when I was researching it said don’t use a conditioner and use only clear shampoo, not opaque that has conditioner in it. She changed and it worked wonders! Especially after a month or so when all of the conditioning had been washed away and the oiliness just improved so much. But her hiar is thick and wavy. So like I said just wondering if maybe that doesn’t work for thinner hair? I’ll be sure to mention this dry shampoo to,her!

This brand was recommended to me at the beauty supply store. I was hesitant. Inn years passed I had tried dry shampoo and hated it. It definitely gives your hair body. I have been letting my hair grow but find my hair has even more oil. Lately, I have also used Wen Cucumber Aloe cleansing cream which seems to be helping my oily hair, Using cleansing cream and the dry shampoo have allowed me to go three days without washing my hair. I can’t remember not washing my hair every day. I have so much more time before work now.

Thank you so much for the handy tip. My hair type sounds a lot like yours. I too have tried the baby powder, cornstarch, etc. and was so thrilled to find dry shampoo so that I wouldn’t have to wash my hair everyday as well. I like the Aveno dry shampoo, but the one you suggest sounds intriguing. I will definitely be on the hunt.

Thanks for the heads up! I’ve got to make a Walgreens run this evening and will pick some up. How many different scents does it come in? As long as there’s a couple that aren’t fruity, it’s all good. Hubs can’t stand to eat or smell fruit. Weirdo! Maybe I’ll try the cool and crisp fresh.
