Best Chocolate Cake Recipe

I made my best chocolate cake recipe, but instead of adding 2 cups of chocolate chips at the end, I added 2 cups of chopped, mini peanut butter cups!

Peanut Butter Frosting

At first I thought the peanut butter buttercream frosting might be a little too rich for me, but let me tell you right now that was THE best frosting I have ever had the pleasure of tasting in my entire life. So smooth. So light. Just a hint of peanut butter. I think I may even like it better than the original vanilla buttercream!

To make it, all I did was make my regular vanilla buttercream frosting and mixed in 1/2 cup of smooth peanut butter at the end.

I will definitely be making the peanut butter frosting again. Hopefully soon. Very very soon.

This cake was so ridiculous. So rich. So chocolaty. So peanut buttery. Kevin loved it.

In the end, I ended up using 2 *entire* bags of mini peanut butter cups. Almost a full bag for the inside and the rest for the outside. That’s over 100 peanut butter cups in a single cake. Excessive? Extravagant? Over the top? Yes. Divinely delicious? Definitely.

Happy Birthday Kevin!

OMG! I made this cake for my Mom’s 86th birthday since peanut butter and chocolate is our all time favorite combination and it was a hit with everyone. I used peanut butter chips in the cake instead of chocolate chips and made a double batch cream cheese frosting. While eating it I felt like I had died and gone to heaven. My husband and I pinched off pieces of the leftover cake every time we passed it and 3 days later when we finished it it was even better than the first day. So I would recommend making it a day or two ahead. I know you’re wondering how we had leftovers, I’m shocked too, but I didn’t want it to end so we very sparingly ate it to make it last. The only alternative was to make a cake just for the two of us but I would have had to go up two sizes in my slacks. I chose to eat sparingly.

I made this cake for my mom’s birthday and WOW!! It was SOO good! I love the extra ingredients with the cake to make it more than just a boxed cake. And the frosting was so good! I don’t have a bad thing to say. Loved it!

I made this cake tonight for my boyfriends birthday! (peanut butter and chocolate lover extraordinaire) For such an extravagant looking cake it is SOOO simple to make! Thank you so much for sharing this!

This cake was AMAZING! I made it for my Dads birthday this weekend and it really was a big hit. I was scared when I put the batter into two 9 in cake pans because it didn’t look like I had a lot of room for it to rise. But it was fine! I also want to add that I burnt my first attempt (badly!) I set the timer for 30 min and when I checked it the toothpick came out covered with batter. (I have a gas range btw) So I set my timer for another 10 min. This was WAY to long sadly and the entire edge was black. (It didn’t keep my teen from eating the inside though lol) So I went back to the store and started over, set the timer for another 30 min, checked it, and had the same results with the toothpick. So I reset the timer for 5 min and almost burned it again! It was not nearly as bad and just had to shave off a tiny bit. But I just wanted to give a heads up to really keep an eye on it! It goes from batter to burnt really quick. Again I have to say, this cake and frosting are amazing! I will never make a plain chocolate cake again. Thank you!

I made this cake for a friends birthday yesterday and it was so good! You’re a genius! I was wondering if you used the Duncan Hines 16.5 ounce box? I was afraid that since this post was dated back in 2009 you had used the old 18 ounce so I cut down some of the measurements for the added ingredients.

I found your cake on Pinterest and made it last weekend for my best friend’s birthday. We were away on a ski trip and everyone who was with us was SO impressed. Thank you for this amazing recipe! So indulgent. Love it!

I made this for my daughter’s field hockey team this weekend. To say it was a big hit would be an understatement. Next time I’m bringing two gallons of milk with me!

You may have just posted my dream cake! I had the BEST peanut butter cup cake ever at Fromage in Clayton, GA. This looks like a close approximation! Their layers had peanut butter in them, but the rest looks spot on! Thank you!!!!!

My anniversary with my boyfriend was last week so it was obvious that i HAD to make this cake to follow my delicious meal :) It turned out FANTASTIC! Obviously my cake-cutting and frosting/topping decor is nothing compared to the pictures…but I am SURE I got the taste right. It is beyonddd delicious people!! My boyfriend and I usually share a piece because it is so rich and delicious that each bite throws you off a lil’…I’m serious!! My boyfriend said this is the best cake he’s ever had and I know he’s not lying because at night he’s always snacking on it. Thanks for a lovely and original recipe that I will use for years to come!

Even in the picture you can see how moist the cake is!!! Sometimes it feels like you’re eating chocolate-peanut butter pudding :) Everyone must try this.

    Hi Amanda-

This was my first visit to your site (amazing, I should add) and after making this cake I will forever listen to your recipe advice! Soooo delicious….dangerously delicious :) A little tip that may make this recipe even easier–I was able to use a food processor for the Reeses peanut butter cups that went into the actual cake–I popped the bag of Reeses into the freezer for a half hour or so before putting them in the food processor–worked wonderfully. Yes, you still have to unwrap them (which is a perfect job for little ones :) but it shaves a little time off.

    Thanks again!!

  16. Amanda

This looks amazing and I am drooling! I’m newer to the blogging world and would love to link to this on my blog, but not sure the etiquette, so wanted to ask you if it would be okay for me to drool about this on my blog? Either way, I am going to make this and enjoy it on a no calorie counting day!! :)

  17. Brittany

    Amanda,
What kind of cake pans did you use? Since you had three layers instead of two in the original recipe, I was just curious. Was the baking time different then too? I wanted to make this for my dad’s birthday this weekend!

  18. Anna

I have to say a huge THANK YOU for sharing this. OMG this cake was to die for. I wound up making 2 of them (one for us and then the other to share). I thought everyone was gonna melt when they had it. Although I did double the recipe for the frosting. Still none the less it was out of this world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I WILL be making this again! Thank you again for sharing.

After googling “peanut butter cup cake” i came across you blog. My fiance wants one for his grooms cake, and the baker doesnt have a recipe to use. So after coming across your blog, i tried it myself. It was amazing!!! But I wasn’t too crazy about the crisco, so I made another cake and used a cream cheese frosting, wth the peanut butter too, and it’s awesome too!

  20. Ali

I just finished making this cake for my hubby’s birthday. It looks and smells divine! I can’t wait until he gets home and we can eat it. Thanks for another fab recipe!!

  21. Tina

Awesome recipe!! I made this cake for an auction to help raise $$ for our downtown and so far, just off slices of the cake, I’ve raised $38 and the cake isn’t finished yet! I’ve been commissioned to make another cake and I promised my wee ones I would make a cake for them as well :)
Your site rocks…thanks for all the goods and sharing :)

  22. Cami

So, I made a modified version of your cake- I made chocolate cup cakes- and then copied mainly the icing and the Reece’s PeanutButter Cups- they were AMAZING.

  23. Christina

    Happy Birthday Kevin!!

That cake looks and sounds so good, I might have to try it. I can only eat one out of the three peanutbutter cups in the pack, but my husband loves ’em!

  39. taranicole

Thank goodness you can’t ruin a diet by pictures alone — that DOES look sinful! I may have to try this sometime soon :) After the diet, of course! haha! Thanks for sharing, and happy birthday to your husband!

  40. Laura

  48. Heather

that looks so yummy….I think we have now found my son’s birthday cake…he has been asking for a certain name brand peanut butter cup cake. Do you think that it would be okay for a diabetic (me) to eat?

  49. alyssa

This cake looks so good, my husband loves pbc too and this looks like the perfect treat for our wedding anniversary next month!

  50. Jessica Jensen

Oh my gosh! Look at that cake! I think I know what I want for my birthday! My husband Kevin loves chocolate and peanut butter too! It must be a Kevin thing! :) Well, happy birthday to your Kevin. Thanks for the idea on the cake! :) Can’t wait to make one! :)

  51. Sherrie

Happy Birthday Kevin ! My son just had a birthday yesterday (Aug 25th) May you have many, many more ! Great cake Amanda ! I am starving now and I love peanut butter cups too !!!

  52. Pati

AAAHHHHHH! You are just “killing me” with those pictures of that CAKE! It sounds and looks divine! I just so want a piece NOW! Just a piece, a small one, not the whole cake. I bake very little since my hubby is not a dessert person tho he likes cookies now and then. Coming from a chocoholic, sweet fanatic family it was a hard adjustment (and I’m all the more healthier for it, sniff sniff). Funny thing, I was just reading peanut butter icing recipes on the web last night for no reason at all, then wondering what excuse I could use to make some. Now your recipes, sound extra tasty, and the pictures… I need to find someone to make it for, who will let me have a piece : )

Happy Birthday Kevin! Young’n : ) Thanks for sharing Amanda!

  53. Dawn

Oh I think I died and gained 10 pounds just looking at that cake! Oh I just want to smell and taste a little piece. What a beautiful couple you make. Happy birthday Kevin!

  54. Brenda Smith

Happy Birthday, Kevin!!!!!! My dad likes brownies with peanut butter frosting and M&M’s on top. This would just make that pale in comparison! Thank you so much for the share!!

    1. Alex

      Hey Amanda!

This cake looks amazing; I’m planning on making for my friend’s birthday this weekend :)
I noticed that you made this one a three layer cake rather than the two layers you did for the chocolate cake. Did you divide the batter into three pans instead or slice one of the layers into two?

      Thanks!
