What Is A Pierogi?

Perogies are like ravioli, but instead of being filled with cheese, they are filled with mashed potatoes! Perogies are very popular in eastern European cuisine. I tried to eat them as much as possible when I went to Prague and Poland!

When I think of mashed potatoes I think of ham, cheese, and broccoli, so I combined them all together in this hearty, cheesy, Ham and Cheese Pierogi recipe!

Frozen Pierogies

For this pierogi recipe, I am using frozen perogies I found in the freezer section of the grocery store.

First you’ll need some ham — leftover ham from Thanksgiving or Christmas works great in this pierogi recipe! If you don’t have any leftover ham, you can just buy a few slices from the deli — make sure they slice it about 1/4″ thick. Chop the ham into bite size pieces and set aside.

Next melt some butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat, then add the chopped onions and broccoli.

Cook, stirring occasionally, until vegetables are softened and browned, about 10 minutes. Remove vegetables to a plate, then add the ham and cook until lightly browned.

When browned, remove the ham to the plate with the vegetables and set aside.

Melt a little more butter in the skillet, then add the frozen pierogies and cook until bottom is slightly brown and toasted.

For the Pierogi Sauce…

Add the chicken broth to the skillet, reduce heat to medium, cover with a lid, and simmer for 15 minutes until liquid is mostly absorbed.

Then add the ham and vegetables back into the pan, then the cream, salt and pepper to taste, and stir gently to combine.

We’re almost done now!! Top the entire thing with plenty of shredded cheese. I used white cheddar here.

This was really easy and delicious. I didn’t have broccoli, so I substituted kale, putting it in when I put the cream in.
    Thanks for the recipe!

I just recently was introduced to piergogis and I love it!  My friend made bacon to serve with it and fried them up in the bacon grease.  So good!  I’m going to have to make your version!

I made this tonight and it was wonderful!  I was a bit skeptical about how it could serve the 4 of us but I forgot how filling pierogis are. Thank you!!!

One of my favorite foods! Your pierogi look delicious! Every family has a slightly different method so whether it be ravioli, pirogies, momo, or karanji, filled dumplings are GREAT!!

These sound so amazing! I’ve never really been a perogis fan because I’ve never really had them with much on them or with them but with all of this, they sound sooooo good! I think I’m gonna stop at the store on my way home and grab everything I need for this! Thanks for sharing, can’t wait to try it! :D

I love pierogis, and never thought to make them in a cheesy baked type of dish like you would do with pasta. What a great idea! Thanks! :)
