Fresh Start: New Year, New Decade

food scale giveaway blog

A few weeks ago I was browsing through the comments section of this blog, as I often do- I love clicking on the blog links and taking a peek- reading your posts, sharing in your stories and getting to know you a little better! :) I came across something on New Year’s Resolutions that I’ve been thinking about ever since- and I wanted to share it here. This is from Sarah at The Strength of Faith:

I work with a girl who absolutely loves Mondays. LOVES them. She says they give her a fresh start. Mondays that start a new month are even better. We were both at work yesterday and were thinking about coming into work next week. Not only will we be coming in on a Monday, but it will be Monday, January 4, 2010. We will be starting a new WEEK, MONTH, YEAR and DECADE. I think this is the perfect opportunity to start fresh; to make one attainable resolution (read: ONE and ATTAINABLE) and to focus on how that one resolution can feed into the other parts of your life.

New year, new decade. A fresh start. I love that!

After posting about my weight loss story last November, I heard from many of you how you wanted to try it- after the holidays, of course! A fresh start in the new year. I have even heard from a couple of you how the first week went- someone lost 3 lbs! Success! :)

I love getting those emails- hearing your success stories, sharing tips, answering any questions I can, hopefully helping out a little! :) I noticed a lot of you had the same questions (and I was beginning to sound like a broken record! :)) – so I thought I’d share a few of those answers here, in case anyone else was wondering! :)

The Most Frequently Asked Question: What do you snack on during the day?

Grapes – they’re Kevin’s absolute favorite. I learned this trick from his mom and aunt- they keep a bowl of fresh grapes out on the counter almost all the time. Whenever you walk through the kitchen, you grab a couple of grapes. It helps keep you feeling full, you’re not looking for other (possibly unhealthier) stuff to snack on, and they’re just plain easy and fun to munch on. :)

Frozen blueberries – a 1/2 cup of these with just a little spoon of cool whip… YUM! A great late-night, low calorie sweet treat.

Clementines – my new obsession. They’re like tangerines, but smaller and sweeter. And super easy to peel- it practically just falls right off. And best of all- no seeds! You can just pop a slice in one after the other. And apparently they have amazing healing powers- I was getting a sore throat right after Christmas, and I was crushed- a sore throat for me is *always* the first sign of a cold. But I ate three clementines that night and the next morning the sore throat was completely gone- and I never came down with a cold. Coincidence? Who knows?? :)

Bananas/fruit – Filling. Low cal. My mid-morning snack of choice.

Granola bars/yogurt – I love granola bars and yogurt, but they’re just not all that filling for me. I eat one and 30 mins later I’m hungry again. lol. I eat these as an afternoon snack when I just need something light to tide me over until dinner.

Popcorn – I was never a huge popcorn person before, but now I love it. It’s definitely my favorite late night snack. My favorite is Orville Redenbacher’s Movie Theater Butter- let me tell you, it tastes *way* better than any popcorn I’ve ever gotten at the movie theatre! :) It’s so buttery you don’t need to add extra butter- and at only 70 calories in 2 cups of popcorn- it’s way, way better for you too! :) When I’m in the mood for something sweet, I reach for kettle corn- sweet and salty. :D Yum.

My Best Tip: Don’t skip breakfast!

I had to really work on Kevin about this one- he was never a huge breakfast person and had every excuse out there! :) “But I’m just not hungry in the mornings”, “I don’t have time to eat before work”, “But eating first thing in the morning just makes me feel hungrier during the day!” (Huh??) But studies show that, even if you eat the same number of calories, you burn more calories if you spread them out over the day, rather than eating them all in one or two meals. So now Kevin eats oatmeal in the morning before work and has a granola bar for a mid morning snack. Starting your day with whole grains and spreading your calories out over the whole day helps keep you feeling fuller longer and keeps your metabolism boosted. (Note: I am so not even close to being an expert in this area- I’m just repeating things I’ve heard that have been true in my experience! :))

A Little Help: from EatSmart

I had this food scale on my Christmas wish list- not just for calorie counting purposes- but also for baking and other recipes that measure ingredients by weight. Imagine my shock when a few weeks before Christmas, EatSmart contacted me and offered to send me the exact scale on my wishlist! :) I have used this little thing almost every day since getting it in the mail- it pretty much lives on my counter! Definitely my favorite thing about it is how small and lightweight it is- it hardly takes up any room. Which makes it perfect for leaving out on the counter, or storing easily in any cabinet, drawer, or small space if company’s coming over. ;)

The most useful feature is the scale’s tare (zero) function- you just put a bowl or plate on the scale, turn it on, and it eliminates or “zeros out” the weight of the plate- so you can load it up with whatever you’re weighing. Then if you want, you can zero it out again and add more! :) It’s great for snacks- that way I don’t have to dirty up a measuring cup or something- just the bowl I’m eating out of. The digital display is big and easy to read- even if there’s a large plate of food on the scale- and it’s definitely an upgrade from the old-fashioned analog scale I was using! :) I mostly weight things in ounces and lbs, but you can also weight in grams and kilograms- which will come in handy with a few baking recipes I have.

Kevin loves it because it weighs items up to 11 lbs- made shipping all our Christmas packages a snap! :)

Not only did EatSmart offer to send me one to try out- they sent one to give away! :) It comes in 5 different colors- and you get to pick! :)

We have a winner!!! :)

Congratulations to #126 Teale! :)

I got married last October 24th and did very well with my diet and exercise leading up to the wedding. My dress was fitted through the butt & thigh (my biggest problem area) & I bought a size too small, so I HAD to do well with my diet and exercise. After the wedding, however, I was so sick of worrying about it and constantly thinking of my weight that I “let myself go”. I don’t think I’ve ever gained weight that quickly in my life. Needless to say, I’m back on the wagon & I can’t wait to feel about my body the way I did on my wedding day again.

me me me me! Lol! I would love to win this item. I started making an effort to eat healthier in November of last year. I knew if I put it off till January and did it as a “new years resolution” I would never do it. What prompted me? I’m a runner..an injured runner. I went from running a little over 4 miles a day, 6 days a week, to running 0 miles and still eating as if I was running. Of course I gained weight. lol! So I made the effort and am so glad I’m finally eating healthy and I feel great. I’m able to run a bit too now. Still recovering, but on the mend and looking forward to training for a 1/2 marathon in 2011.

I bought a new cookbook for the new year…More Healthy Homestyle Cooking. This cookbook has great recipes, but also tons of tips and substitutions to make all your recipes healthy! I love it!

I’d been struggling with a new eating habit and the validation of “less calories” is so very true. Would be great to have a scale to help along!! :)

Hi, I’m a new reader but I have to say that I just love playing around on your blog. You have so much useful information! I have a family history of heart disease and while I’m not overweight, I recently found out that I have high cholestrol. One of my New Years Resolutions was to eat healthier and smarter so I can live longer and be with my kids forever. Okay, forever is a stretch but past the age of 60! Thanks!

One of my resolutions this year is to exercise more; I feel so much better & have a lot more energy when I exercise. Another resolution is to use my time more wisely. That ones tough, but I’m working on it!

My husband and I are both having a contest between the two of us. We would love this to help us out. I love your blog! Besides my resolution of losing weight, I also want to spend more time just playing with my kids. It seems like we get caught up doing “stuff”, running errands, or whatever. Thanks again for your blog.

Thanks for the snack ideas and sharing your weight loss story in November! I haven’t made a huge effort to lose weight, but I did start running. I went from couch potato to running 3 miles or more a day…thanks for your inspiration!

my goal this year is to use less processed food and more locally grown foods and products. my mom has a food blog and this is her focus for 2010, too! If you want ideas of recipes using “whole” organic, or local foods…check it out! Or if you just want some delicious recipes…www.thetablerunner.com

That scale is going to be mine…i can feel it!!

Candace January 12, 2010 at 4:23 pm

Wow! Grapes seem like a wonderful idea – I’ll be sure to try it out! I always find myself snacking on something unhealthy, and perhaps it’s time to break free of that nasty habit.

Good luck to all! :)

Audrey January 12, 2010 at 4:35 pm

Wow, the scale sounds great for diets!

416
Linda Hill January 12, 2010 at 4:49 pm

My husband and I are starting “The Biggest Loser” competition at his work this week. The scale would help so much with menu planning and recipes. I enjoy reading your blog. I love grapes as well BUT lately they have been so expensive!!!

417
Jenni January 12, 2010 at 4:52 pm

I freeze my grapes – during the summer they make excellent “ice cubes” – they stay frozen quite awhile and as they thaw they add a little flavoring to my water.

Brandi January 12, 2010 at 5:01 pm

Would <3 one of these!! :-)

Evil Pixie January 12, 2010 at 5:08 pm

This year is my year to get healthy, and I admit weight is an issue. I haven’t really dieted before, but I fully recognize (and dread) it is necessary for me to get to the healthy state of mind and body I want to be in by the time 2010 rolls into 2011. It’s funny that you have a food scale as a giveaway because I just met with my nutritionist friend who talked about weighting food and ingredients as part of my new food routine, so fingers crossed the scale goes home with this pixie. :)

Aimee Horne January 12, 2010 at 5:08 pm

I have lost almost 100 pounds in the last couple of years…however, Thanksgiving and Christmas almost did me in! I put back on about 10 pounds so now instead of losing that last 20 lbs…I have to lose about 30!!! This scale sure would be handy-dandy!

421
Kristie Havyer January 12, 2010 at 5:19 pm

I am so happy to have found your blog. You inspired me so much. I am now on week 2 of counting calories and started at 155.2 and last week (first weigh in) I was 151.4. I would love to own that scale. It would make life so much easier~

Jacquita January 12, 2010 at 5:48 pm

I have not set up a blog yet, but do plan making one. My goal this year is to lose weight.. I need to lose about 200 pounds, and I want to try and do it the old fashioned way.. I know a scale will help with portion control and this looks like a great one.. I love reading all your post and have been using your recopies.. If you have any recipe suggestions for healthy food I would love them. Thanks for having this great site..

I have also started my own weight loss journey. In the last 10 weeks I have dropped 20 pounds. This scale would take out all the guess work when it comes to portion control. I love your blog and loved reading about your weight loss story. Keep it up!

Cathy January 12, 2010 at 6:02 pm

I usually try to have fruits or veggies setting around for the kids. They never want them but then I shove them in their face or follow them to the basement with a plate and ya know what? The plate comes back empty.. Tonight I put a bowl of grapes out and when we were finished with supper and cleaning up we all grabbed a few.

Maandee J January 12, 2010 at 6:13 pm

I LOVE grapes too! I would LOVE to have this scale!! I’ve been thinking about getting one for a while now. I’m putting forth my very best effort this year to get back down to my pre-prego size. It’s definitely not easy! One of my biggest challenges and goals for this year is to give up sugar!
Thanks for sharing your tips AND for being so generous in your giveaway! *fingers crossed*

Megan Walter January 12, 2010 at 6:31 pm

For the first week of January, I gave up breads (or more like starches). I had no rice, pasta, tortillas, chips, all of that stuff and surprisingly, it wasnt as hard as I thought! It was good to know that I didnt need to rely on bread for everything…there are TONS of amazing foods that dont have bread in them! One thing I really liked were these chips I found called “riceworks” and they are gluten free, wheat free, and are made out of brown rice! They have the most delicious flavors and I dont feel guilty eating them! ;)
Anyway, I lost about 2 pounds the first week and I am trying to not eat as much bread from now on.
Thanks for the awesome giveaway opportunity!

434
Samantha January 12, 2010 at 6:31 pm

I would love that scale!

435
Melinda V January 12, 2010 at 6:32 pm

Great tips! I love grapes and have always wanted to try clementines. Your story was very inspiring and I am hoping to try some of your ideas. With 5 children I find it difficult to stick to any type of food program, but this sounds like something I could do. My goal is to get fit this year through exercise and proper food choices. Thanks!

Gloria January 12, 2010 at 6:55 pm

Hi Amanda,

I tend to eat healthy, but due to an auto-immune disorder vs. meds, I’ve gained nearly 50 pounds. It’s a depressive state, but I decided to kick my body into full gear and exercise 6 days a week; 3 days at home on the treadmill and 3 days a week in the gym with a nautilus routine. This morning, after a 3 week regime, I decided to weigh myself and I lost 2.5 pounds. It may not seem like much to some, but I was utterly in tears at the mere thought that I actually lost weight. I wanted to share my “sweet snack” with you…. blueberries with a dallop of vanilla yogurt sprinkled with granola….very yummy! Thanks for the giveaway and good luck to everyone on the road to a healthy lifestyle!

Hi guys! I love the site and need a food scale, my DH also thought it a good idea to use it for packages, and did it in front of the kids who then decided to weigh a few of the toys and proceeded to weigh themselves, they where very disapointed when the scale broke under their combined weights.

Mary January 12, 2010 at 7:19 pm

Anne January 12, 2010 at 7:36 pm

Thank you for this terrific post! In the Spring and Summer my husband and I walk and he is also an avid runner. I can walk the curves and run the straights at the middle school track that we use and I lost 14 lbs. last summer. I am excited to start up again but I love the snack ideas. I have learned that I need to break meals up into small snacks and that works well for me. I also juice with the hubby and that always curbs our appetites. Plus the benefits of juicing are incredible. I am not a young chick so if this works for me it will work for anyone! I also make mental notes. When I was diagnosed with osteoporosis my doctor told me soda is soooo bad for my bones so that mentality works for me everytime! Those are extra calories no one needs! We also cook lots of meals with fresh veggies and eat a lot of fresh fruit You are right, it satisfies your hungry for something sweet and is so good. Plus your blueberry idea, those are full of fiber and have all sorts of fat burning powers! Woo Hoo! I like to cook salmon with a drizzle of olive and fresh rosemary. It makes a nice satisfying meal and the benefits of salmon are wonderful too! Thanks for this inspiring post! Have a great week!

Very cool! I’ve been wanting a scale for a while. I’ve lost around 20 lbs but have been AWFUL the last several weeks. Normally I am very good at the holidays…not this year. I keep telling myself get back with it! I am getting bored with my food though, I think that is a big part of it.

445
Carrie January 12, 2010 at 8:10 pm

Amanda, I absolutely love your blog and have been so inspired by your story! I am right where you were before your weight loss and would love to get where you are now! I tried before the holidays and lost some but then got sucked in by food and parties and gained in back! My goal is to start again and keep going and then keep it off. Thanks for the inspiration-you look great!

Hi Amanda! Congrats on your excellent weight-loss success. I have a few problem areas that I have been trying to get rid of for a year now and I work out EVERY day. I think my eating habits may chime in on this part and would love a scale to help me be as successful as you. I’m only 22 years old and in graduate school so I know that how I eat now will impact the rest of my life. Thank you for all of your support and great blogs!

457
Nicky Hurt January 12, 2010 at 9:21 pm

Oh I would love one of those scales. DH can’t figure out why even though he’s running up to 5 miles every day, he’s not losing weight. (I think I know!!) This past summer I spent a day with my elderly grandmother making my favorite of her cakes- a German Coffee Cream Cake, which uses grams for the flour and sugar. The scale she got me is one of those with the line that moves along the numbers, but it weighs so heavy that the difference between 500grams and 600 grams is miniscule, and I can’t figure it out. AND I need to lose 60 pounds.

I didn’t make a resolution this year- I never keep them. So I picked a word for the year (a la Ali Edwards) and it is Complete. As in complete projects I start, home improvement stuff before we put the house up for sale next fall, and give my complete attention to my kids, rather than have one eye on them and the other on the TV or laptop. Seems like a great resolution to me. :)

458
Becky January 12, 2010 at 9:41 pm

I have been wanting a digital scale for so long! I always borrow my mom’s ‘not-digital’ scale to measure food I buy in bulk to freeze. I also use it to weigh chicken because I found I was making portions too big. Because I’m pregnant, I’m not trying to lose any weight, but this would be so valuable for my bulk shopping and portion control in May when I’m ready to lose some baby weight!

459
Lori S. January 12, 2010 at 9:42 pm

I need that scale to help me with my weight-loss :) That is one of my goals this year. I plan to drop 15 pounds. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I win!!!

JHolley January 12, 2010 at 9:43 pm

Hi Amanda, I want to first say that I LOVE your fonts. Thank you thank you thank you for doing this. I love using them on my notes I make for my students. Well, my New Year’s Resolution is to start blogging and cooking. You have helped with both! I have made your chocolate trifle(on my blog) and your yummy chicken in tomato sauce pasta! :)

461
Tiffany Robinson January 12, 2010 at 9:55 pm

Everyone always needs a little pick me up to start out the year fresh! Mine is more dates with the husband and eat healthier portions. This scale is awesome, I hope I can win this to get another step closer to my goal.

You totally inspired me to get in shape after the birth of my 3rd baby! I am a total snacker and late night eater. Your post on your weight loss story was terrific. I put your words into action right away. I don’t know what I’d use the scale for, but I’d love to have it.

I love your blog and I love that you had this post today to remind me of a fresh start! Just got back from a week vacation and have found it difficult to return to the gym but I’m definately going tomorrow! Its easy to go every day or every other day normally but then go on vacation and I wonder why it is so hard to return! Thanks for the motivation!

I *LOVE* reading your blog. The fonts I downloaded from here ended up on my twins first birthday invitation! Your organizational posts inspire me (before the twins I wassuper duper organized…now I just dream of being organized!!) I also have a boston terrier…however, I am pretty sure I’ll never get some of the shots you have of your puppies. I even tried the Christmas tree light blur picture bit my dog wouldn’t sit still.

The scale would be handy in helping me start a healthy lifestyle for my one year old twins. (now that they are eating real food).

I would love to win a digital scale. Not only can I use it for food, but I am also a hair dresser and could weigh the developer! Thanks!

Hi Guys! I love reading your emails to everyone! I wanted to ‘weigh in’ as well and let you know that I’m going to be starting on your calorie counting, too! I have weight issues due to a past medication and even though I live a very active and healthy lifestyle, I have had an extremely hard time losing this weight. This plan is so simple and still extremely healthy I can do it for me, my husband, and my two little girls! As soon as I recover from my tonsillectomy (January 5th) I’m counting calories with Kevin and Amanda! I’m so excited to start this new year off right and doubly so that I’m going to get some really incredible recipes that are tried and true! Snacking is my number one downfall because I run a daycare, so while all my snacks are nutritious, they are often calorie filled and…well…often, lol! This new plan and your great snack suggestions are my new best friends! Thanks Kevin and Amanda! Can’t wait to see who wins that scale!!!

Thanks for the chance to win. I don’t really have a resolution for this year, but since last June 1st, I’ve been attacking my treadmill and eating healthier. As of this morning, I’m at a new low weight (of the last decade, ironically), so I am very happy with my results so far. I’m not losing fast, but I’m losing, and keeping it off. That’s what counts.

Happy New Year!

Awesome product! It always is so overwhelming and frustrating to try to calculate calories, especially with a complicated dinner–this would be so nice and convenient to have and the small size is the best bonus.

I don’t usually beg but please, please, please choose me! I have been looking for a scale for ages and this suits perfectly.

My main goal this year is to get outdoors more. I figure the outdoor lifestyle and fitness go hand in hand.

My husband and I both gained 15 lbs since we got married- only 6 months ago! We are really proud of that.

Our goal is to lose it all before June. And we are off to a good start. Just by cutting back on portion size since christmas, we have both begun to drop some weight. I’m down 6 lbs! And I’m staying hydrated, so I know it’s not just water weight :) We have started exercising together 3x per week, and I’m about to start a Yoga class. We have also begun to eat super healthy, and are loving the energy boost that comes with that!

Here is our current favorite meal:

A fun salad and Tuna Fritters. Think Hamburgers, only made out of tuna and oats. Yum. Well, ok, it sounded gross to me, but my sister made some when she had us over for the holidays, and they were so good!

Take 1 can of tuna, 3/4 cup of Oats, 1 egg, 3Tbsp BBQ sauce, and a few tsp each of garlic and onion (she uses powder, I use minced and chopped fresh stuff). Mix that up in a bowl. Put a little oil into a pan over medium heat.

Seperate the mixture into fourths, and spoon 2 of the piles onto the pan. With your spatula, flatten the lumps out and press in the edges to form 2 pattys. the thinner they are, the more evenly they will cook. Watch the edges, and when it looks like the bottom is starting to brown, flip it. You want to wait until then, or the fritter will fall apart.

Once both sides are lightly browned, use a spatula to put them on the buns, add a little more oil to the pan, and start on the next two. burned them. but they still tasted yummy).

You can treat them like normal burgers. I put BBQ sauce on mine. They are nice and filling, and we usually save the second helping for lunch the next day. And what could be healthier than tuna and oats?

Clementines ROCK! I don’t like any other citrus fruit so I’m all excited when they are back in season. I started the Green Smoothie Challenge to help me detox and get back to my gluten free living. I’m hooked on their Banana Smoothie which is just 2 cups of water, 3 bananas & 7 oz romaine lettuce… blend till smooth. My family looks at me like I’m crazy but I love the flavor. There are other smoothie recipes too. I’m not a big breakfast eater but have no problem getting smoothies down. I’m on day seven and already lost four pounds. Love your site!

Eating grapes is an awesome idea since I am working on trying to loose after wedding pounds!

Before Christmas I decided that I would start the year off right, begin a weight-loss program & get closer to the LORD.

So far so good… I’ve lost 3 pounds since January 4th and I keep pushing myself to do better.

I joined SparkPeople & boy has it made a difference! I feel like I absolutely have support.

Good luck to everyone! :)

Our story goes a little something like this…read your blog and I was inspired, waited until the holidays wrapped up and took charge. My husband and I are tackling the P90X program which means working out (hardcore) and healthful eating. I decided I can’t use the excuse that we just had a baby much longer as my youngest is nearly 8 months :) It was time to take charge and make healthful eating and exercising a priority. I am documenting the journey on our blog to keep us accountable. So far so good, but this scale would be great. The fact that it zeros out bowls, etc would be so handy. I am using the traditional 1 lb. food scale right now, which is a bit archaic. This may have to make my wish list too…

Love the blog. I’ve read/used a number of your fonts, tutorials, etc. You are so crafty!! I am also in awe of your scrapbooking room!

I love your blog!! I love how you say to leave a bowl of grapes out!! I just started doing that about a month ago… well my bowl has grapes and apples and clementines…. All things that my 4 year old loves! You are absolutely right everyone in my house is eating more fruit! Great Tip!

I’m starting a new diet this year! In hopes to lose some weight for a trip! A scale could help with those interesting items that you just don’t know the weight/size of!
