Coffee Crusted Steak Recipe

I cannot wait to share the incredible steak recipe with you guys! Goodness gracious, this was delicious. It starts with a simple, tried-and-true ribeye steak but it completely transforms into something purely magical with a simple coffee crust. It will totally send your tastebuds into overdrive!

You will love this steak if:

1. You don’t like coffee.
2. You don’t like black coffee.
3. You prefer your coffee with unmentionable amounts of cream and sugar.
4. You like the smell of coffee.
5. You do like coffee.
6. You seriously, really like coffee.

Now come on, let’s get started!

Coffee Crusted Steak Recipe

The ingredients are really simple. All you need is a little butter & olive oil, salt & pepper, your steaks and coffee. That’s it!

Pick out some well marbled, ribeye steaks and season both sides with salt, just as you normally would. I prefer kosher because of it’s flaky shape, it seems to stick to the meat better! :)

Now the coffee. I just grabbed some ground coffee off the shelf at the grocery store. Decaf for me, because I’m already high strung enough as it is. And hazelnut flavored because it’s absolutely delicious- with just a hint of sweetness.

Give the steaks a good sprinkling with the coffee. Don’t be afraid!

Next, find yourself a nice, heavy-bottomed skillet (one that would make Sir Mix-A-Lot proud) and begin heating over medium heat. Add the butter and olive oil, and heat until the butter is just browned.

Then add one of the steaks. Oh my heavens, this smells incredible right now!

Cook for 3 mins on the first side, then flip and check after another 3 mins. The steaks were pretty small (1/2 lb each) so they were definitely done after 3 mins on each side.

Let the first steak rest on a plate covered with foil while you cook the second steak. You’ll want to let them rest for a few mins before digging in anyway! :)

Coffee Crusted Steak

2 (8 oz) ribeye steaks
kosher salt, to taste
freshly ground black pepper, to taste
ground coffee (hazelnut)
1/2 tbsp olive oil
1/2 tbsp butter

Season steaks with salt & pepper, then cover with ground coffee. Heat a heavy-bottomed skillet over medium heat, and add the butter and olive oil, and heat until the butter is just browned. Cook steaks for 3 mins on each side. Let rest on a plate covered with foil for 5-10 mins before serving. Enjoy!

I was a little nervous to try this. Ribeyes aren’t cheap! But I took your word for it. You should have seen my husband’s face when he saw them cooking! He didn’t believe me when I said it was coffee. We really liked it! I marinated my steaks, though, with KC Masterpiece Steakhouse. I used French roast coffee, but I would have probably preferred House or Breakfast Blend. I will make these again!

I’m so glad I gave this a chance. My husband and I absolutely love it! My husband isn’t particularly fond of coffee, unless it has a lot of cream and sugar, but he loved this. The coffee just added a subtle flavor that only enhanced the steak. We will make it again!

I tried it on the grill. We used plain ol’ coffee…but all 4 of us agreed that we couldnt taste the coffee on it at all. And there was a ton of it on there! The steak was good, I think we were all just disappointed that the coffee flavor was no where to be found. Maybe the trick is in the melted butter you say to cook it in stove top! I’ll have to try again =]

I made the coffee recipe recently and oh my goodness was it delicious!! I actually had the decaf hazelnut in my kitchen. I didn’t tell my husband or kids what it was made of because they hate coffee. Needless to say, everyone loved it and my kids, who are extremely picky eaters, demolished it! It was fun playing the guessing game of the secret ingredient when dinner was over and no one could believe it was coffee (they all thought it was pepper because of the coloring). The hazelnut gave it a wonderful subtle flavor…definitely a keeper!!!!

This is great! Usually I make a Saturday morning trip to Starbucks to pick up 1 or 2 of their 5 lbs bags of coffee grinds they throw out and I then use them on my lawn. It not only makes my lawn greener (probably the acid) it also smells like mocha. But, on a steak… I’ll surely give it a try!

I couldn’t wait to try this recipe. I’ve tried many recipes from your site, and loved them all, until this one. It was ok, just not for me. I’m still glad I tried it.

When I pan sear steaks I deglaze the drippings with brandy and stir in some heavy cream to make a brandy cream sauce. may be a few peprcorns if I’m in the mood. with this I am going to try to add a dash of kahlua to give a bit of sweet and mocha flavor to the brandy cream.

Unfortunately this did not go over well in my house. Neither my boyfriend nor I liked it at all. However, we don’t like coffee in the first place. This is the first recipe of yours that wasn’t a hit, and I have faith that the rest will be just as good as the others I’ve tried!

Can’t believe I never thought of putting coffee on steak! I often put coffee in beef dishes such as pot roast or beef chili. It enhances the beef flavor and gives it a nice color. I think John’s suggestion of the brandy cream sauce sounds delightful!

Hi Susan! You can use instant coffee or freshly ground coffee beans, but not the grounds after you’ve already made the coffee. Hope this helps!
