Personally I think these cake mix brownies are so insanely good. So dense and rich and fudgy!

To make brownies from a cake mix, add 1/2 cup melted butter to the red velvet cake mix or any cake mix flavor of your choice.

Press into the bottom of a well-coated 9×13 baking dish. I like to line my dish with foil to make the bars easier to get out. Try my trick that makes lining a pan with foil SO much easier.

Next bring 1 cup of heavy whipping cream to a low boil and pour over 1.5 cups of chocolate chips (that’s approximately one bag). I used milk chocolate chips, but you could use any kind of chocolate chip you like. Even white chocolate! Let the chips sit for 5 minutes then whisk to combine until smooth and thick.

  • 1 cup butter, divided
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 package (about 36) whole Oreos
  • 1 bag (11.5 oz) milk chocolate chips (about 1.5 cups)
  • 1 bag (12 oz) mini chocolate chips (about 1.5 cups)
  • 1 cup (1/2 pint) heavy whipping cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a 9×13 baking dish with foil and coat with cooking spray. Beat together cake mix, 1/2 cup melted butter, and 2 eggs until fully combined and smooth. Press into the bottom of prepared pan and bake for 15-18 mins, until just set. Do not overbake.

Pour over Oreo layer. Top with mini chocolate chips. Refrigerate for 30-45 mins to allow chocolate ganache to set up. Cut into bars and serve.

Hi, I’m so excited to try this recipe. One question though: Would the quality of the brownies change if I make the red velvet cake layer from scratch?

  2. Deb

Most amazing dessert I’ve had that you make at home. My girls ask for these as their go-to celebratory dessert. I make them in a smaller pan so the red velvet layer is a little thicker, and it comes out perfect.

my layers all fell apart once i cut into them and i let it sit overnight. i’ve made these before and it was fine, but just wondering what i did wrong this time.

  3. Angelina

Hello! I just wanted to reach out for clarification. In one part of the instructions, it say to mix 1 cup of melted butter with the crushed Oreos. When I did that, I had to add almost half of another pack of Oreos and it still wasn’t thickening. Further down in the article, another set of instructions says to mix the crushed Oreos with 1/2 cup of melted butter. Should it have been the 1/2 cup of melted butter I went with? Regardless, it smells amazing and I just may keep them as brownies! But should I try again with the Oreos, I want to make sure I do it correctly.

Hi love your recipe!I have a quick question. If the oven does not work can we microwave the batter? I googled it and they say u can but just want to see if you ever tried it. Thank you

  5. Zach

Hi, i loved it! Made a few times ??.. but why the red velvet and oreo layers when cut it’s separated. It’s like the layers not well combined. Not attached together.

    1. Amanda

I haven’t frozen them yet, but I think they would be fine! If you try it, let us know how it turns out!! :)

  6. Travis

Ok, for one, I made these a couple years ago from a different site and they are pretty tasty. So much in fact I decided to search it again to make for work. A helpful suggestion: when giving step-by-step instructions on how to make it while scrolling down, make sure it matches up with the instructions at the bottom. Scrolling down to the part between the pictures where you say to “Next mix the crumbs with 1 cup melted butter until well combined.” (copy and pasted), well at the bottom of the page with the listed instructions, it says to pour 1/2 cup of meted butter into the Oreo mix. I went with the 1st one. Was wondering went it looked creamier than that picture. Turns out I used a full cup instead of the 1/2 cup. Might want to fix that before someone does the same thing. Should taste pretty rich now! Lol

  7. Aimee

I’ve made these a couple times and they are AMAZING. However, I’m not sure if I’m supposed to wait until the brownies have cooled completely before I add the Oreo layer. Every time I’ve added the Oreos, the brownies collapse in the middle a bit. They always turn out delicious, but I’m wondering if anyone else has had this problem? Thanks. :)

  8. Amy

If I make the red velvet brownies from scratch, is the cook time the same for the brownies (15-18 min) or should I go by the cook time in the recipe for the homemade brownies provided (44-48 min)?

  9. Laureen

Eeeeek! In the top part of the how too it says melt one cup butter over Oreo. The bottom says 1/2. I used a full cup!
I hope they still come out okay! :(

  10. Marcus

Made it today.  They are very good. I was concerned that the box cake mix directions didn’t match the recipe but I follwed the recipe. I can’t remembe the last time i used a book mix, but for this recipei I se no need to make the red valvet cake from scratch, with all of the chocolate ganache and chocolate on top and Oreos I think it would be a waste of energy to bake it from scratch. I will save this one.

    1. Marcus

If you over heated or boiled the cream, it won’t set up…you have to just get it to a start of a bubble or it charges the compound of the cream

    2. REJ

White chocolate is a lot softer than dark chocolate. If using white chocolate I’d recommend 2:1 ratio of white chocolate to cream. Just my suggestion

  11. Diane Sconyers

These look amazing and so would a hot Pink mixer with n my kitchen!!  Really need a new mixer sure would love ? to win one!!

  12. Rachel Johnson

These are so delish however, as a warning, middle of the recipe under the picture where you mix Oreos with melted butter states  1 cup melted butter but this is too much. I think it’s supposed to read as add m the remaining of the cup of melted butter, so a half cup. Can fix with more oreos if you have them, learned the hard way. Otherwise these are so amazing.

  13. Jenni Nakken

I would LOVE to win the mixer! I I love baking, but it goes a little slower without a great mixer like this one!
I’m making these brownies today for my family party, so I will get to taste how delicious they are/look.

  14. Sandra

I am in the process of making these and I agree with previous posts – the butter measurement must be off. I had to use an entire second package of crushed oreos to soak up all the additional butter. 1 stick of butter per 1 package of oreos is the correct amount. I’m continuing on with the recipe- wish me luck!

  15. Lindsey Valdiviez

These are so good and not hard to make! They are delicious and perfect for a party or anything! I 10/10 recommend these brownies!

  16. Tisha

About to make these now so they will be ready for us to have as dessert after our Valentine’s Day Dinner here at home! Been drooling over these for about a week now! Will let you know how they turn out. ;) Next I will be trying to Peanut Butter no cream cheese pie you have posted! Love your Blog doing an awesome job :)

BTW: Love the color on the kitchenaid :) haven’t ever seen one that color! Gorgeous!

  17. Vicki Bogia

This recipe looks absolutely delicious, I will have to make these, and I would love to win the Kitchen Aid mixer, I would really like to own one,to make some incredible desserts.

THIS is what they mean by decadence…yummmmm! I have featured this amazing recipe in the Absolute Best Brownie Recipe Roundup over at dreamingofleaving.com! Keep those yummy ideas coming :) xo

  19. Kylie

These were so good! I had to use a white cake because I could not find red velvet but they were delicious. Everyone loved them and i will definitely be making them again. Thank you for the recipe

  20. Florence Heugh

I cannot wait to sink my teeth into one or more of these…..it looks devine!!! Would like to win the mixer :) :) :)

  21. MaryLouise

This looks yummy but how old is this recipe? Red Velvet cake mixes have not weighed 18.25 os. for a couple of years–16.5 oz. now. How would you adjust the recipe to accommodate the smaller mix?

    Thanks

  22. Alyssa

These brownies are beyond AMAZING! I have made them twice already for two different occasions and everybody RAVES about them! Thank you for such a great recipe!

  23. Mallorie

So I’m making these as we speak! I just added the butter to the Oreo’s and I have a gooy mess?! It is really runny. I’m not sure what I did wrong! I crushed a whole thing of Oreo’s and melted two sticks of butter. What kid of butter did you use? Any suggestions?

  24. Gerie Fling

I have not made these but would love to. My mixer broke so I could use a new one and Raspberry is a beautiful color.

  25. GiGi

I made these and when cut, had a problem with the Oreo crumb layer not staying on top of the red velvet cake. Anyone else have this issue? They were good, but the separation of the Oreo layer was a bit of a disappointment.

    1. Adwa

Hi Gigi, I had the same problem. I think it’s because the butter measurement is wrong. I don’t think we’re supposed to use 1 cup of butter for the Oreos. I had so much butter coming out of the Oreos I had to soak them up with napkin.

  26. jules f

Hi, I honestly have to say this is one of the most beautiful brownies I have ever look at! Unbelievably the work of an “Artist” ! Simply V-Day…… I would love to share this with my 82 year old father-in-law who is now my employer I just became his full time caregiver. I have the desire to spread kindness since I was blessed with caring for my parents and sister before they moved on to join the Lord! Wow! What a great brownie can do!!!!

  27. Kerry

MADE THEM! OMG DELISH!!!!!! I brought them to my daughters day care teachers and to my coworkers. (We may or may not be eating them right now for breakfast!) Thank you for the recipe!

  28. Kerry Howe

Making these right now! I’ll let you know how they turn out. Only one problem. I ate too many of my Oreos while baking that I had to open up another pack I had set aside for Oreo balls! Oops! Haha

WOW! Those brownies look like the most delicious decadent! treat Red Velvet + Chocolately Brownie = HEAVEN!! I wish I could do that for Valentines Day! Thanks for such an amazing opportunity to win a KitchenAid Mixer…that raspberry color tho! I don’t even own a mixer, so I always whip stuff with my whisk, which is easy with melted butter, but not so much when you have to cream butter and powdered sugar! so I cant make all your yummy recipes :( …if I ever would be so lucky to have one I could make every recipe on this blog!!!! :’) Love your recipes and travel pics! I’m following on pinterest, facebook, instagram, and twitter! <3

HELP!! I am making these brownies right now. The step by step shows 1.5 cups of butter (1/2 in batter, 1 in oreo mexture). The recipe says 3/4 cup butter, divided. Am I over buttering in the truffle layer using 1 cup (2 sticks) of butter?

  32. destiny

Oh my heart – I am drooling, over both the brownies and the mixer! I wonder which one I’ll dream about tonight? Thanks for the opportunity to make the brownies and to win the mixer!

  35. Lynne

These brownies look so good, we want to try tomorrow! That is a good question from GiGi about the butter – please check the amounts! Thanks for an awesome recipe!

  36. GiGi

Question about the Butter…the recipe says ‘3/4 cup butter’ divided. But the caption under the photos uses 1/2 cup melted butter in the cake mix and 1 cup of melted butter in the crushed Oreos. Which is correct?

  37. Angie T

Definitely will be making these on Vacation with my family and best friend at the end of this month! I have had this dream mixer on my wishlist for a while now. Thanks for the opportunity to win it!
