Kevin is such an awesome and thoughtful gift giver. He is famous on the blog for his fun and unique Christmas presents — like the time he surprised me with trips to Savannah and Europe.
And it’s not just with me, he has an amazing talent for thinking of especially meaningful gifts for every one he knows. He usually has better ideas for what to get my parents than I do. This year he surprised his mom with a trip to NYC — she had never been before and it has always been her dream to go at Christmas.
This year, Kevin surprised me with a dream closet makeover. He wrapped up a hot pink and white striped shoebox, and inside were sketches of our closet, drawn to scale, with sample ideas for the ultimate closet. I was over the moon. I have been wanting to do something fun with our master walk-in closet since the day we moved in!
As you can see, our closet was in serious need of a makeover. Let’s take a look at the “before” pictures. The is the view from the door.
Her Side {BEFORE}
What I Wanted To Fix: I wanted to get my shoes up off the floor! They were always in a huge messy pile.
I also seriously needed to do something about this sweater situation.
His Side {BEFORE}
What He Wanted To Fix: Kevin also needed some shelves for his sweaters. They were just piling up in the corner (as seen in the first photo in this post).
Getting Everything Out
Right after we moved into this house we had Wilson Lumber come out and customize our pantry. (Be sure to check out the before and after photos!!) They did such a good job that we had them come back to do the closet. The night before they came we had the dreaded task of getting all our stuff out of the closet. But taking the hanging clothes out was MUCH easier with this simple hack! Cinching them in a trash bag kept all the clothes on their hangers, and then when I got ready to hang them back up again, all I had to do was take off the trash bag. So easy!
After
They came the next morning, and were done in less than 5 hours from start to finish. They took down all the old shelving, placed it in the garage for me, put up all the new shelves, rods, and cabinets, and cleaned up after themselves when they were done.
Here’s my new side!
All of the shelves, drawer fronts, and drawer pulls match the pantry. The Over-The-Door Mirror is from Pottery Barn.
Just like the pantry, the master closet has a Push Button Door Switch. When you open the door, the light comes on!
The new cabinet covered up the vent in the room, but they were able to put a vent in the base of the unit. I think I’ll paint it white so it blends in!
Here’s Kevin’s new side…
He has plenty of shelves for his jeans and sweaters now! Plus lots of drawer storage for socks and t-shirts. And a vanity to collect his watch, coins, wallet, etc at the end of the day.
And here’s a view of my new side.
I have SO much more sweater storage now!!
I got Kevin one of these clothes folders for his birthday last year, and now he is a folding fiend!! That night, he took every single t-shirt out of his drawers and re-folded them — then organized them by color and occasion. As part of my Christmas present, he re-folded all my sweaters for me before I put them back in the closet. We’ll see how long I can keep them this way! ;)
As for the cabinet…
It’s home to all my shoes! I definitely wanted a closed cabinet instead of open storage because my shoes aren’t that cute! ;)
On the top shelf I have my purses and wallets organized with a paper sorter. I LOVE these dividers and use them all over the house. Here they are in my kitchen organizing my baking trays and pots and pans.
I moved all of my scarves into the big drawer. Before they were just draped over a clothes hanger. Multiple clothes hangers. (You can see them in the corner in the 4th photo from the top.) But they took up a lot of space and I hated hanging them back up after I wore them. I think I’d prefer to just toss them in a drawer. So we’ll see how I like them here for awhile. :)
Here’s one last view… I should probably change out that light fixture for something more stylish. And oh, haha, just noticed one bulb is burned out. Classy. ;) #keepinitreal
And the same view with all our stuff. :)

Dimensions: The dimensions of our closet are: 148″ wide x 78″ long x 9 feet high. You can download a full copy of the plans for the closet and dimensions for all the shelves here: Download Closet Plans.
Paint Color: Unfortunately I don’t know the paint color in here. It was this color when we moved in, and they didn’t leave any leftover paint in this color in the garage. :(
Mirror: Over-The-Door Mirror from Pottery Barn (Still in stock!!)
Thanks so much for looking! Let me know if you have any questions!
I’m drooling over your new closet!!! Great gift Kevin!!!
So, I just have to ask… Are those pom-poms in the corner of the top shelf on Kevin’s side of the closet (before picture)? Does Kevin have a secret occupation/hobby you would like to share with us? ;-)
Fabulous closet! Where are Kevin’s shoes? :)
so jealous!!! and your hubby is a doll!! Big Time!
on another topic…..anyway you could help us install Statcounter? Feedjit has stopped working for us and I would like to still be able to know where my readers come from. But I’m so confused on installing it. Your tutorials all always so right on and easy to follow. Help!!!!
Oh my Amanda!!
I can’t think of a better gift than organization. You must have snatched up one of the last truly thoughtful men. And he neatly folds as well!! Such a joy :) The closet is so perfect in every way and I know Martha Stewart would agree.
Lots of Love!
Lisa :)
Both f you are awesome people! Love the closets!
That looks amazing!! I would love to do that to mine!!
Your closet is beautiful and so well organized! Can you offer some tips or suggestions on closet organization?
Don’t mind me. Just having some closet (& clothing!) envy over here ;-) It’s amazing!
WOW!!!! your closet is bigger than one of our bedrooms! Nice!
What a wonderful gift! I’m in need of not only a closet maker over but a closet remodel!!! …and a wardrobe remodel. Haha. Great inspiration!
It looks great!! What a nice gift! I have my shoes in a big cabinet as well, and I love it, however it started to smell of foot odor after a while from being enclosed, and I tried many things to combat that, and finally found that “Purification” oil from Young Living on a couple cotton balls placed throughout killed all odors – it’s my new go to! Just thought I’d let you know in case you start to get that problem! I really didn’t think I had foot odor that bad, but I think it was just the fact that they were all in a small enclosed cupboard! Have fun with the new closet!
Hi Amanda, Love the new closet – so Pretty!!! Just a note though: If you are going to Paint the vent be careful and try to only use one coat – too much paint prevent air-flow and will make that poor vent useless – lesson learned :( Silly painters!! Always fun to see what you’re up too!! ~ Rylinn
Wow I love how clean and organized everything looks! I’m with you on the scarf drawer — some things just don’t need to be perfectly folded. ;)
Always, Anita
It looks so good!!!!
Gorgeous! It always looks great for a week or two then you get sick of keeping it that way! This always happens to me.
VERY nice. And yes, could you tell us more about how that beautiful mirror is hanging over the door, is there a mirror on the other side as well. It’s really pretty.
Thank you Sandy!! The Over-The-Door Mirror is from Pottery Barn. :)
I love the oval mirror hanging over the door. Where did you find if? If you dont mind me asking. Id like to get one for my daughter, she’d love it!
Thanks!
Thank you Lindella! The Over-The-Door Mirror is from Pottery Barn. It’s still in stock! :)
What a fabulous makeover. Makes me want to do my closet.
Very nice! I’m sure that’s a load off for you all. Are you OCD? lol The reason I ask is because all of the colors in the closet are arranged by color.
Great looking closets, Amanda, but what I am wondering about is the mirrors. Is that some sort of a hanger holding them on the doors? Our home, like many these days, has hollow doors and I always thought I would like a mirror on the bedroom door. Maybe, you may have found a solution??
Thank you Gladys! It’s an Over-The-Door Mirror from Pottery Barn. :)
SO NICE!!
So SO fun. I’m in desperate need of a closet makeover!!
Can you loan out Kevin..only for a bit..Maybe around the holidays? :) I’ll give him back!!
Such a GREAT gift!!
The master closet and the kitchen – yes, our one bedroom apartment had a fabulous kitchen with a massssive island, which even though we’re not big cooks was swoon-worthy – are the -only- things I miss from our apartment to our house (scratch that, forgot the horrid plastic garden tub. Miss the size, nothing else about the bathroom!).
We went from something -almost- this size in an apartment (a little narrower, but just as long if not longer. I used to joke you could sublet it) to a teeeny little thing in our master at the house. The guest bedroom closet is bigger! Fortunately the girls we bought from already did some of that wire shelving or it would be nay unusable. As is, we already don’t use it as much as I would like.
SO I am super jealous of your fabulous new(er) closet. What an absolutely wonderful present from your wonderful hubby! Sadly the whole ‘extending the exterior brick wall of the house’ that mine would need is probably a few Christmases put together c:
the closet is amazing. Is your floor wood or tile? I love it too. Great gift!
It looks wonderful and so light. The wood floors will also make it easier to clean. Great selections.
I think a closet is a thoughtful, generous and lovely present from Kevin! I don’t know what it is, but when my closet is organized, I just feel better about life, like I have it together or something (believe me, I don’t LOL). It such a huge boost the good, ole self esteem when my shoes are lined up and my clothes are sporadic all over the house and around my bedroom. And I refuse to get a bad case of closet envy here! Refuse I tell you =)
