This Ham And Cheese Tortellini is one of our favorite tortellini recipes!! It’s so easy to make because you can use frozen tortellini. The cheesy garlic butter sauce is to die for!!
You can make this entire meal in 15 minutes. Everything cooks in one pan so you only have ONE dish to wash at the end of the night!!
It’s the perfect quick and easy weeknight meal that everyone will love.
Ham and Cheese Tortellini Ingredients
Super simple ingredients here. All you need is ham, fresh or frozen tortellini, cream, shredded cheese, chicken broth, frozen peas, garlic, and diced onions.
I buy frozen diced onions at the grocery store so I never have to chop onions! It’s such a time saver at night. You don’t even have to thaw them out before using.
How to Make Ham and Cheese Tortellini (Step by Step)
Start by melting a tablespoon or so of butter in an ovenproof skillet over medium-high heat.
Until it’s brown and foamy, like so.
Add the onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden brown. Add 2 cloves minced garlic and cook until fragrant.
Next, add the ham, broth, cheese tortellini, and plenty of salt and pepper to taste. Stir to combine and bring to a boil. Cover, then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 12 minutes until the tortellini is plump and tender.
Next, stir in the peas and cream.
Turn off the heat and stir in 1/2 cup shredded cheese. I used pepper jack cheese for an extra kick here!
Top with an additional 1/2 cup shredded cheese, then place under the broiler in the oven until the cheese is golden and bubbly.
Love this super cheesy Ham & Cheese Tortellini!!
Everything I love in one pan. Seriously wish I could eat this off the screen right now! Make this for dinner ASAP. Hope you enjoy!

Delightful. Made as close to directions as possible although had to use garlic powder. Enjoyed very much and will make again.
We make this dish so often! This is always my husband’s dinner request! We add in a load of veg, peppers, spinach, tomatoes. DELISH!
I’ve made this several times & it’s absolutely delicious!
This was really great. I had to get something together quickly with one kid coming home from sports and another going to their sports practice and a husband running late after work. This worked well and we will make it again. I wasn’t sure what I thought about using swiss cheese but that made it really good. Will be making again!
This quickly became a family favorite! It’s so yummy!
Looks delish, am making tonight. Just a heads up though . . . when you click 2X or 3X it only updates the first ingredient so you’ll need to manually calculate the other ingredients.
Great recipe! Easy to make and tastes delicious.
That’s 19 oz. tortellini? 9 oz. doesn’t seem near enough!
I made this last night with fresh tortellini. I simmered without the tortellini for 9 minutes to thicken sauce then added tortellini last three minutes. I defrosted the peas in the microwave before adding. Delish.
I make this meal once a week for the family.
It’s so easy to make yet so hearty and good.
I’ve tried different cheeses in the recipe and it still
tastes just as good.
This sounds and looks delicious!
It look so good i love any thing with cheese
i just loved it its is so tasty
hey jackuie do u boil the noodles?
Are the directions the same when using tortellini in a vacuum sealed package from the pasta aisle? People asked above and their question was not answered. I have a few packages I’m looking to use up before I go buy more. ??
Loved the ham and cheese tortellini! So nice to have a 15 minute prep and have it taste so good! Thanks for sharing. Definitely a “do again”! We all loved :)
Thanks for the step-by-step pictures. Looks awesome and will give it a try this week!
This kicks the crap out of anything I’ve found on the big food sites, really AWESOME!. Quick and easy and tastes fantastic my husband is super picky and really liked it. Thank you!
My husband ate three helpings and the kids all cheered.
I almost cried.
Just fixed this dish and it is DELICIOUS!! The hubby said to put this recipe down as one of our regular dinners!! WINNER!! Thank You!! :)
Just wanted to say that this passed the kid test with flying colors. I have 7 kids ranging from 1 1/2 to 12 years old and EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. of them ate this with NO Complaining and even going back for seconds. Holy cow! Miracle of all miracles. Thank you for providing me a small glimmer of happiness in my day ;)
I cooked a double batch for my family and my son’s gf who is Italian and very picky. Everyone loved it! Great recipe for ham left overs!
We thoroughly enjoyed this dish, in fact I’m making it again tonight. I did cut back on the onions just a bit (hubby isn’t a big fan of onions) and used Monterey Jack cheese. Delish!
When making this I would omit the salt & pepper. We found that the cheese & ham made it all plenty salty. With the added salt it was too much.
My wife brought this recipe home for me to make. OMG, I am sure glad she did. It was amazing. I made one small change, mainly cause I didnt have the frozen peas. I used a mix bag of corn, carrots and asparagus. It was easy to make and only took about 30 minutes.
Thanks so much for the lovely recipe. I made it this evening, sticking very close to the recipe (added a few more ounces of tortellini otherwise I kept everything the same). It was enjoyed by everyone in the family. My husband even said it was exceptional!! Needless to say, I will be making this dish again.
Made this last week, seriously planning to have it again soon!
Can this be made in advance and then frozen and then defrosted and baked at a later time?
Just made for dinnet…family loved it. I doubled the recipe due to son with hearty appetite. He said this is a kepper.
My dish came out too watery. If I make it again, I’ll use less onion.
It seems chicken broth upsets my hubbys belly, whats a good substitute for it?
I fixed this for my family tonight, and they loved it (and so did I)! Thanks for the easy, quick, delicious meal idea!
Made this tonight for dinner. The onion was a bit much for me but I’ll definitely make it again and just cut it down some.
Can you use boxed tortellini?
What kind of tortellini? Cheese tortellini?
Made this tonight and it’s a keeper very good and easy.
I don’t have an “ovenproof skillet”. Could I do this in a different pan and skip the broiler part?
Baking dish
This was so tasty and easy to make! I had to hold myself back from eating thirds. My husband and parents loved this dish too. I like another reviewer’s comment that they added shredded chicken. I might try that if I don’t ham around the next time.
Can dried tortellini be used – the kind you buy in the pasta aisle? I assume cook them in a pot of water first right?
I used a pea/carrot mix, and added a healthy squirt of spicy brown mustard. YUM!!
FINALLY, a recipe that starts out with a reasonable amount of onions! :-) Can’t wait to try it out.
Oh my gosh! Delicious and quick! Made it in less than 30 minutes. Going into the keeper file.
This looks delicious. Love your site.
Drool! So cheesy!
I’m allergic to Jack cheese. I could use Cheddar tho right? Thx
ooops. excuse me. my eyes didnt catch the cheese part. sorry.
I have some prosciutto on hand. I might give this recipe a try with that instead of the ham. Thanks for the idea!
Is the ham pre-cooked? I have som raw ham steaks I’m trying to find something to do with and this looks divine. Thanks!
If you’re in the US, all ham is precooked. So you’re safe using the steaks you have.
Made this tonight and its a new fave!! Added about half of a rotisserie chicken (saved the other half for easy chicken wraps for lunch), used a 19 oz bag of tortellini (2 growing boys, needed more than 9oz pasta;) and half pepper jack/half mozzarella and it was scarfed down by my 3 guys! Thanks for the yummy recipe!!
Wow! Looks fantastic. Definitely trying this very soon!
I make a ton of recipes from Pinterest (over 150 so far!) and this is by far one of the family faves. I used Pepper Jack because our family loves kick and I seriously could not get enough! Absolutely going into the top 10!
I made this a couple of weeks ago and it was great. It is a “keeper.”
Thank you for sharing this amazing recipe! Made it last night and my whole family devoured it! I used pre-cut ham chunks and shredded 1/2 block of colby jack cheese along with 1/2 block of pepper jack and it was to die for. Definitely printing out the recipe and adding to our family favorite binder! :)
I assume that if you use frozen tortellini, they need to be defrosted before you add them, is this correct? We are going to try this dish tonight, I can’t wait! Thank you for sharing this recipe!
I use frozen tortellini and do not thaw them out first. Hope this helps! :)
My question exactly. Do I have to cook the tortilla from frozen first?
Mmmmm, you had me at cheesy :)
The printable recipe states to simmer for 12 minutes then step 3., put cream and peas in?
Do the pea’s and cream go in before or after the 12 min simmer?
After :)
I add canned sliced mushrooms to as many recipes as I can, and I think they would be great in this recipe. Also, to replace the peas, you might consider using steamed broccoli or diced carrots.
My fiance and I don’t like peas at all….anyone have a suggestion of what veggie to substitute that would cook the same with this dish? Thanks!!
broccli, carrotts,
Asparagus cut into 1 inch size spears.
cooked spinach
It seems we never have much time to cook anymore and this sounds fast, easy and delicious. My family really likes tortellini, too.
Thank you for sharing this recipe, I have huge love for pasta and I’m sure this will hit the spot.
Im going through a phase at the moment of making new things using ham and cheese, this is not something i have tried and cant wait to get stuck in! Thanks
Good Morning! I made this last night and it was a hit!! I used deli ham and mozzarella cheese… It was loved by all and the hubs is taking leftover for lunch!
Thank you – this will be added to the rotation!
Oh my word, this looks amazing! I want this for breakfast right now!
Perfect! I have all of the ingredients already…guess what’s for dinner tonight??
Are there nuts?
I’m not a hamburger fan so I love the idea of adding ham instead to pasta. I can’t wait to try this. Thanks!
Love easy meals like this — I am always short on time and patience by the time dinner rolls around ;/
Ive been making this dish prob my whole life, it started when I had it at a restaurant in my home town. after they closed my mom kept making it for me at home! my version is a lot easier though, its just tortellini, ham steak cut into cubes, a jar of alfredo sauce, bag of frozen peas and shredded parmesan cheese for the top. mix it all and bake and comes out thick and creamy!
