Scarves. How I wear ‘em.

So, last week when I was talking about my current love affair with scarves, somehow in the excitement of all the commenting, and what I can only imagine was some sort of scarf-induced high, I let myself get talked into making… a video. That’s right, a real, live video documenting a few of my favorite ways to wear scarves.

Not that I’m an expert scarf-wearer or anything.

But today, right here on kevinandamanda.com, I am posting that video.

Before you watch, you should know- yes. I am a dork. A complete, and total dork. There you have it.

So, in conclusion, and in addition to me being a dork, while those certainly aren’t the only ways to tie a scarf (and you probably already knew most of them) they are the 5 ways I most often wear them. They’re quick, they’re easy, they’re relatively pain-free… and the looks could work for either winter or spring.

A couple of questions I meant to answer in the tutorial… but forgot.

How do you store your scarves?

Mine are just wrapped on a regular clothes hanger- tied on just like the first method I showed you in the video. You can kinda get an idea from the picture below- I just took the hanger from my closet and hung it up on the hook on the back of my door to take the pic. I meant to hold up the hanger and show it to you in the video, but I took all the scarves off the hanger first. You know, to make it easier to put them on while taping myself. Oops. Way to plan ahead there. Anyway, one regular-sized hanger holds about 10-12 of my scarves (they’re pretty smooshed on) – and I have about 15 scarves, but at any given time, the other 3 are usually either on me, hanging on the coat rack in the foyer, or strewn somewhere else about the house.

scarf hanger

I did see this hanger the other day in The Container Store though. It looks pretty cool for a real scarf collecting enthusiast.

Where do you get your scarves?

The scarves in the video, in order of appearance are from Coach (striped scarf), LOFT (pink & white floral scarf), LOFT (purple paisley scarf) and Old Navy (solid white scarf with poms). All of my other scarves are from either LOFT or Old Navy- except for the pink one I got @ Gloss in Birmingham for Valentine’s Day. :) Now uh, hook a girl up here- where do you get your scarves??

So, I think that’s about it. Oh, and, just so ya know- The making and editing this video had me so flummoxed that at one point, without my knowledge, the webcam on the iMac snapped a picture. This, in all its deer-in-the-headlights glory, is that picture.

And I am a dork.

And I look like I belong in an infomercial for Bumpits.

That is all.

Wear a scarf this weekend! :)

You are not a dork! Repeat that you are not a dork! You are so total amazing with all your terrific ideas and I have scarves I am going to pull out and give this a whirl. Maybe even take a pic or two!

You have encouraged me to get a camera I can shoot without needing an engineering degree! I like you lil Sony camera and plan to save up to buy one! Thanks Amanada, you are terrific!

Mary February 27, 2010 at 9:35 am

Thanks for the scarf tutorial. They all look so cute on “skinny little” you.

Jaime Burns February 27, 2010 at 11:22 am

I just love looking at your blog, thanks for all the inspiration!
Keep up the good work!!!

Kayla Wagstaff February 27, 2010 at 11:31 am

Look how LITTLE you are!! Reading your weight loss story has inspired me to start counting my calories & not taking a bite of everything in sight ;) I lost 1 pound the first week! 14 more to go!

Michelle February 27, 2010 at 12:09 pm

Thanks for the tutorial! I love the look of scarves, but have not yet ventured into wearing them (other than when it is FREEZING outside) reguarly. You have inspired me to go shopping for scarves! =)

LOVE the last pic! ;)

Tami February 27, 2010 at 3:10 pm

Great video! I wear my scarves many of the same ways you do. I also roll them and tie them over a headband (which holds the hair so the scarf doesn’t have to) or tied onto my purse. I get my scarves all of the place, but a favorite place to get them is trift stores. They are always is really great shape and you can get some great brands and nice vintage ones. Some I’ve gotten at our dollar store! I even have a pretty one from Jordan. My dh got it for me while he was there. Oh.. to store them, I have built-ins (coated wire ones) in my closet. I have kept one of the bars open just for scarves and tie them on it. It is really easy to find them and it looks like a colorful wall that makes me happy!

Coleen February 27, 2010 at 5:11 pm

simply adorable!

btw, I recently picked up a couple really cute scarves at Pier1/WorldMarket for just 9.99 each. kinda surprised to find such nice scarves there; great colors/quality for a great price!

Lea February 27, 2010 at 6:33 pm

Love this! I have a drawer full of beautiful scarves and this has motivated me to get them out and WEAR THEM! Thanks!

Tausha February 27, 2010 at 10:46 pm

love it! I didn’t know how to tie three of those. I have to say-the third was my favorite-tie and scarf! Loved it all! Apparently, I am not the only one who loved it! You are quite popular!
I will be back soon! Please, stop by sometime and say hello!

Jami February 27, 2010 at 11:37 pm

Thanks for the video! I am a scarf addict as well. I use one of those multi-tier pants hangers to organize them. I even blogged about it once.

By the way, I love your accent! so cute. :)

Laurie Howard February 28, 2010 at 1:31 am

Loved it! And, you are so NOT dorky…you are lovable & oh-so-cute! I love your scarf collection and actually just bought the last one you showed (cream one from Old Navy) but have not worn it yet. I am inspired to sling it over my shoulders tomorrow now! Oh, and I actually LAUGHED OUT LOUD when I read your comment about the Bumpits!!!!! So funny! That infomercial makes me laugh every time I see it for some reason. Love your site, picture and recipes!!

Laurie Howard February 28, 2010 at 1:34 am

Oh, I forgot….love your jeans. Where did you get them?

Traci February 28, 2010 at 11:42 am

You. Are. Darling.

Maureen February 28, 2010 at 12:10 pm

Diane February 28, 2010 at 1:47 pm

I absolutely LOVED watching your video…please do some more! It was great to hear you talking, to be able to actually put a voice with your pictures now! I can’t believe you are not a teacher…because you definitely CAN teach! I can’t wait to go try some of these ways to wear a scarf! Thanks for sharing Amanda!

Cynthia Rust February 28, 2010 at 3:02 pm

The video is awesome!! I needed some new ways to tie the scarves I went crazy about last Christmas! Thanks–I linked you blog on my blog. I want all my readers to know about you!

Brenda February 28, 2010 at 5:24 pm

Cute video! Love reading your blog. Thanks…

Ashley Welling February 28, 2010 at 5:38 pm

There is a fun way that my friend at work showed me. It is very similar to the first way you showed people on your video with the basic knot.

1. Fold the scarf in half, and put around your neck so you have a loop.
2. Put one tail in the loop
3. Twist the loop
4. Put the other tail through the loop, and you can make it as loose or tight around your neck as you want.

Raquel February 28, 2010 at 5:44 pm

Greats scarf tutorial. Enjoying the blog tutorial using it to get started. Thanks.

Ashley Welling February 28, 2010 at 6:02 pm

PS…I linked this on my blog! Have you heard of Affordable Scarves [dot] com? They have some really cute scarves there…and they are all $20 or less!

Rebecca February 28, 2010 at 6:09 pm

Thanks for doing that! Who doesn’t love a good scarf?! What’s your total weight loss now? You look GREAT! I’m jealous! : )

TwoHeartsTogether February 28, 2010 at 6:54 pm

your voice accent is so cute! I love it!
I just realized I DONT have a turtle neck shirt, I need to get one because the scarfs looked great on you with your shirt.
I never knew there were so many ways to wear a scarf, thanks for the great looks!
I hope you do more videos soon :)

Kiana February 28, 2010 at 8:22 pm

Thanks so much for thinking of doing this…and being brave enough to post it! It was super helpful…I have a couple scarves I love, but feel I never wear them right – hopefully that’ll never happen again!

Karina February 28, 2010 at 10:25 pm

You are sooooooo cute!!! Thanks for the tutorial!!!

Sophie March 1, 2010 at 4:51 am

For about 4 years now I have had a complete love affair with scarves I share your dorkdom and commend you for it ha ha.
Oh and p.s. for the mama’s with new babies the last one is a great idea for breastfeeding the scarf works as a great blanket to cover your bare bits ;) xxx

heidi March 1, 2010 at 7:16 am

If you have an IKEA near you, they have a great ‘hanger’ that I use for my scarves — best part is that is doesn’t cost too much or take up too much closet space. You can check it out here –> http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70108912

Jenny March 1, 2010 at 8:55 am

Just had to tell you that I bought a new scarf over the weekend and sat down and watched your tutorial this morning(again) to help me figure out which way to wear it! I picked the 4th one… ;-)

Thanks for providing me with much needed fashion, home decor, cooking and life tips!!!1

Lori Allberry March 1, 2010 at 9:20 am

Amanda – you just rock! You rock! I call myself a dork ALL the time, so the fact that you call yourself the same just tickles me pink! =)

I’m so thrilled I finally had time to watch this video, it was sooo sweet of you to film this for us all! I love seeing how you wear them!

And the picture – oh my goodness, that is WONDERFUL!!! I love that you showed us that! Too cute!

Tracy March 1, 2010 at 9:35 am

First off – you ARE NOT a dork! Secondly, I loved the video. While I am not a scarf connoisseur, I do love the scarf look. My mother actually made me a custom crocheted scarf for Christmas. It is purple (my favorite color) and then she accented it with clear beads on the fringes at the end. Did I mention it is about 10 feet long? I love it because I can wrap it around my neck several times getting the look I want and it is still long enough in the front (if that makes any sense!).

Thanks Amanda!

Cindy March 1, 2010 at 10:49 am

Stop by my blog today. I have something there for you :)http://crazy4crafting.blogspot.com/2010/03/im-beautiful-blogger.html

Sarah March 1, 2010 at 11:35 am

So cute!! I had never thought about that last way, but I have some scarves that will work for that. I cannot wait until spring to try it!!

p.s. Saw your sweet puppy’s photo on the Pioneer Woman – great photo!!

Allison March 1, 2010 at 1:11 pm

You’re so cute! Not quirky at all! And you look FAB! I love the scarf ideas! You make me wanna run out and get some (or make some??? Do I have that kind of motivation?).

Sue from Oregon March 1, 2010 at 3:28 pm

Your post just gave me a giggle…now on to watch the video!

Ashley Glover March 1, 2010 at 3:42 pm

My friend Laura from Lily’s Laundry blog referenced your blog in her blog, so I came across your scarf tutorial…I loved it! I even went out to Old Navy and bought the cream pom-pom one yesterday!! Thanks so much for the tips!

Kayla March 1, 2010 at 3:50 pm

How fun! Your scarves are so cute and that was a great video! It was great to hear your voice and see you after reading your blog for months now!

rachel in Cali. March 1, 2010 at 5:36 pm

OMG… you’re so cute! :0)

Melinda March 1, 2010 at 6:27 pm

I love scarves. I’m wearing one right now. I get my scarves from Old Navy too, but I love to get them from Forever 21. Great prices. The one I’m wearing today is silk and it’s from Urban Outfitters. It was a little more expensive but worth it because I get so many compliments. Hope you can find some cute scarves from my sources. :0)

p.s. I also store mine in glass jars & vases in my spare bedroom on a little table where I keep my perfume and jewelry.

Hizzeather March 1, 2010 at 9:06 pm

Saw your pic on Pioneer Woman! I was so bummed you weren’t a finalist. Great job though!

Lynn March 1, 2010 at 11:48 pm

Amanda! You make that look so simple. What I wouldn’t give to have a tall skinny neck like yours! When I do scarves I look more like a turtle or I don’t tie them very well and they keep falling off! I am a dimwit when it comes to scarves…but LOVE yours and they look fabulous!!

aj March 2, 2010 at 12:54 pm

Amanda, you are the best (and also so darn cute!). Thank you SO much for the scarf tutorial. I recently bought 2 scarves and realized this morning that one would look so cute with what I was wearing, but I had no idea how to wear it. I watched your video in the moments right before I walked out the door and I was so proud, sportin’ my new scarf. You rock! :)

Jeri March 2, 2010 at 9:02 pm

I love your webiste. I’ve never posted a comment before but I read you all the time. The scarves are beautiful. I wished I owned one but I absolutely hate the feeling of something around my neck. Maybe I’ll give it another try in an effort to look more fashionable!

thatgirlblogs March 2, 2010 at 10:58 pm

my fave part is how you pose with your hands on hips after each look ;)

Lynn March 3, 2010 at 9:41 am

You need to do more videos! This was great, and you’e NOT a dork! I’ve always loved scarves on others, but was always afraid to wear them myself. I just never felt I could pull them off. Well, now, thanks to your wonderful video, I’m going to be obsessed with collecting them. I can’t wait! You started something! :)

Sara March 3, 2010 at 7:54 pm

Saw this and thought of your blog!

Trina March 3, 2010 at 8:16 pm

Amanda, I am a fellow scarf wearer and this technique was new to me. I hope you enjoy!

Wendy March 4, 2010 at 11:55 am

I LOVE your scrapbooking storage. How do you sort your papers? I only have a few bins, but they are packed and at first I thought organized, but not so much. How about a video on how you organize your scrapbooking supplies? (hint, hint) :)

Patty March 4, 2010 at 4:19 pm

I love this tutorial. I have been wanting to try new scarves since I haven’t used mine in a loooong time. Thanks.
Love your blog.

Beth March 4, 2010 at 10:39 pm

Thanks for the video! I bought a few scarves in the past year but have never worn them because I didn’t know what to do with them…especially the more square ones. Chico’s has some great scarves (that’s where I get mine). I think they used to have a rep as an “old lady store”, but they’ve changed their image lately. You still may be a bit younger than their target audience, but even if you don’t dig their clothes, they have GREAT accessories like jewelry and scarves.

emilyjpaterson March 5, 2010 at 8:24 am

Oh my gosh! You are so NOT a dork! You’re beautiful and adorable! Thanks for posting this :) I’m definatly wearing a scarf today – I feel all inspired now haha

T March 6, 2010 at 8:11 pm

Love the tutorial! I never know what to do with scarves. Being able to see it done was sooooo helpful! Can you do another video tutorial with some spring/summer tops? I need to know how to wear a scarf with short sleeve tops/tanks/dresses/skirts etc.

Lorie March 6, 2010 at 9:35 pm

You are too cute! And you look GREAT!!

Amy Corrigan March 6, 2010 at 10:46 pm

I’m all serious reading this post on scarves and watching your video. Then I get to the picture and it was cute, but when you mentioned the bumpits I just can’t stop laughing. You look great and I would’ve never thought… but bumpits, themselves, crack me up!

cait March 7, 2010 at 8:51 pm

Oh how I love scarves! They’re my favorite accessory…no matter what season we’re in. First time stopping by your blog…love it! :) Will be back.

Ashley March 8, 2010 at 7:40 pm

(slaps forehead) Omgsh. Your first method. Lmbo. I um…it never OCCURRED to me! I’ve been putting too much thought into scarves I guess! You call it basic, but, like anything else common sense…right over my head. Your basic way is the first time I even considered wearing scarves. Lmbo. Wow wow. And, and I don’t think you’re a dork at all! But…lol…don’t you knock bump-its. Lol. Frigging bought one. Lol. Yet never use it. Lost it sometime back actually lol. I do do the bump it “look” though. Lol. All messy and chic in the same breath. :D

Shell March 9, 2010 at 12:58 am

Dont know if you watch oprah or not but tomorrow Tesday I think its tuesday they will have a show you might love to watch…lol I thought of you when I seen the previews. A fashion show for us ladys and guess what they will be talking about…yep you guessed it scaves!!! Hope you get to watch it.

Sonja March 9, 2010 at 11:57 pm

You are so stinkin’ cute. Not a dork. Just love ya.

Amanda Sevall March 10, 2010 at 1:52 pm

I love wearing scarfs too! I loved your video — I can totally identify with your “dork” feeling. ;) I get my scarfs at all the same places, plus Target, Gap and ETSY!!! I have found some of the coolest, totally unique scarfs on Etsy. I get the most compliments on those too. I’ve also made a few of my own. :)

Nicole Sykes March 12, 2010 at 12:15 am

I am also in love with scarves and had to share this with you: I recently bought this –> http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70108912 at Ikea to hang my scarves on! It’s worked wonders!

Úrsula March 12, 2010 at 8:33 am

You are going to love this video.

Janie Pearson March 13, 2010 at 2:40 pm

I hope you will give more tutorials in the future. This one on scarf-tying was so sweet and helpful. Nice job!

Pie March 15, 2010 at 11:39 pm

ohmygod. you sure have so many pretty scarves. <3 envyyyy ahahaha.
and thank you for the tutorial. (: after watching your video, i realized i had been using my scarves for nothing. xD

Hot Mama Kelly from Austin March 16, 2010 at 7:45 pm

I am wiping away tears of laughter…I love your honesty! And everywhere, the rest of us dorks who follow you like puppies are rejoicing in the solidarity. Have a great day!

Fiona March 18, 2010 at 12:03 pm

So that’s how you suppose to wear scarves! Thank you! Loved watching this! You are the best Amanda!

Kerry March 25, 2010 at 11:53 am

The day I read this blog I had to laugh, the whole thing was just so cute and funny AND totally German. They LOVE scarves too! I catch myself thinking of you everytime I see a scarf! I can only imagine that you have gotten several surprise gifts from other adoring fans…

Thanks for sharing!!!!

Suburban Sweetheart March 27, 2010 at 11:19 pm

Oh my God. Your accent. I adore it. I… have never met or heard in real life anyone with an accent like that!

Ashlee April 1, 2010 at 9:25 pm

Thanks Amanda! Winter is so not over in Utah so this will definitely come in handy for me!! You’re a doll!

Julie May 2, 2010 at 5:26 pm

Love you scarves! Mine our more for the winter wear but I love the summer, lighter scarves. Wal-mart always has cute one for only $5! and Target’s really good place too!

Debora July 26, 2010 at 7:23 pm

Hello Amanda, it’s been a while that I wanted to write a message. My name is Deborah, I live near Venice with my husband and my two children. Asia nearly 11 years and Alessio 6. I just wanted to tell you that I love everything you do … they’ll be millions of posts like this but know that I really think.

Amanda August 14, 2010 at 3:59 pm

I think you are so precious!!! I just giggled the whole way through b/c you are so cute! Thanks for the infomercial :)

Helena August 20, 2010 at 9:12 am

You are so adorable!

Mandy Ford August 20, 2010 at 9:56 am

Love this! And now I really want a scarf like your adorable white pom pom one! :)

Nancy August 20, 2010 at 10:09 am

A dork you are not. I loved the scarf bit. I love your blog…dogs are adorable. You are very talented.

faith October 6, 2010 at 9:35 am

I design and of course wear my scarves. Check out my New Landry Collection to see how I wear my scarves!

Maria Trader October 6, 2010 at 9:41 am

I love that you are a dork! Makes you totally relate-able :)

Cee Cee October 29, 2010 at 1:56 pm

Hi Amanda,

Thanks for your scarf video-I love it!! I ran upstairs and grabbed a scarf to put on as soon as I watched it. And you are adorable!! I feel like the dork because I’ve been wearing my scarves all wrong ’til now :)

Sheryl July 31, 2011 at 9:01 am

Amanda, I found this video on YouTube and immediately thought of you since you love wearing scarves. This particular video shows several ways to wear and incorporate a square scarf in your wardrode. Hope you like it!

Christie October 24, 2011 at 11:05 am

Thanks for the video Amanda – and you are NOT a dork!! I love scarves myself and I did actually learn a few new ways to wear from you!! Thanks so much!!

Patricia October 30, 2011 at 10:50 am

I have my scarves on a hanger also the one thing I do differently is I have shower hooks (the cheap round $1 a set type) hanging from the hanger so I can easily pull that off one at a time.

I also have an obsession with scarves for whatever reason I RARELY wear them. It’s sad really. LOL.

Patricia October 30, 2011 at 10:59 am

and I forgot to say I get my scarves from all different places this year I have bought one from american eagle which I love! (http://www.polyvore.com/aeo_bright_floral_scarf/thing?id=41825195)
I bought a cashmere tan tartan from ebay.
It looks sort of like this: (http://www.polyvore.com/giant_check_scarf/thing?id=11371269)
And a tan one almost the same color from Walmart.
Last year I bought a cool scarf from target that is silver flake lame’ unfortunately the “flakes” fall off and get everywhere.

I love purses and shoes too clothes somewhat but mostly I tend to go crazy in the fall and the late spring/summer.

Annie B. November 8, 2011 at 12:50 pm

Love the video! I have been crocheting scarfs like crazy! Your video helped mix up my stow a little! And your a very creative dork :) haha!
Be sure and visit my blog! When I hit 50 followers I’m doing a giveaway! !

Amanda Keener December 6, 2011 at 11:07 am

Loved the video :) Very helpful! I never know how or when to wear scarves so I never do. My sister in law got me the cutest one from Istanbul and I have only worn it once. Now I have multiple ways to wear it! I love the last style you showed, that has got to be my favorite as well.

Stephanie March 29, 2012 at 8:19 am

What do you do with the tags on scarves? Leave them? I usually get a seam ripper and remove them, but maybe that is not right?

Florence May 2, 2012 at 1:50 am

Hello Amanda !

It’s the first time I see you “in real” and I was a great pleasure :)
I don’t know what is a dork, and I probably have to go to my english dictionnary quickly after that post but at this moment, I only want to congratulate you for all you are doing in your blog for us.

For us mean for all the world, as you can imagine easily, I’m not living in your country … It’s incredible how the web is offer you this opportunity to share with other people :)

Thank you again,

Kerry June 11, 2012 at 5:01 pm

I love your video ~ very helpful, and I agree with Carol, if you’re a dork I want to be one too!! Thank you for sharing!

jen September 12, 2012 at 1:15 pm

Thank you for sharing this! You are NOT a dork (well if you are then I would proudly be a dork too).

Tess November 28, 2012 at 7:28 pm

Thanks a lot for the video! Ways 2-4 were all ones I hadn’t tried or had forgotten. You’re good on camera!
