We started our cruise in Budapest, and the next morning we woke up in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. This was our view of the castle high on a hill as we disembarked the ship. We couldn’t wait to start exploring this beautiful city!

Have river cruised with Scenic Cruises. They were amazing. Great food, drinks and tours. Does the MS Sound of Music have a “free bar” other than meal times?

Could you please let me know if the sound of music ship had a elevator as I have arthritic knees. Thank you so much

Hi, loving all the info about your Gate 1 Danube cruise. Thinking of doing the same one next year. Could you post pictures of the daily information sheets that passengers are provided? Saw some old ones would love to see newer ones to get an idea of how the days’ activities are planned.
    Thanks!

I’ve always been pretty skeptical of cruises, but seeing this makes me realize it’s a pretty effective way of covering a lot of sights, and looks way more comfortable than an overnight train or bus. The food alone makes it look worth a try!

For such a small ship it sure is amazing! And the food…..oh my heavens. I would be more than happy to take several plates of the lamb chops!

The smallest cruise I have been on was 700 people in Tahiti and I thought that was a wonderful size, but 120 sounds magical. Just enough people and not too may all at once. I love cruising and haven’t done a river cruise but it is something I have been thinking of as I think it is a great way to get a sense of the places you want to return to more extensively – it is like a sampler platter. The colors of that church are like a fairy tale!

Color me green with envy right now!! I’ve always wanted to cruise internationally. I think I’ll need to check out Gate 1 travel next year when my husband and I celebrate 10 years!!

This sounds like the cruise of a lifetime! Absolutely amazing. Thanks for the info on Gate 1 Travel, will be looking into it!

WOW! I am sending this to my parents! My mother has been dying to go on a river cruise, but my father is being a stick in the mud…if this doesn’t convince him, nothing will. Now I want to go, too! Great photos!

I’m almost embarrassed to say that I have never been on a cruise. I know!! Each of these photos was more gorgeous than the one before it, and believe, it’s made me want to book the exact same cruise as my very first one. Great tip about the power strip, too – thanks!

Beautiful pictures! Makes me wish we were back on the ship cruising down the Danube. Can’t wait to see the rest of your photos!

Holy…..my jaw dropped when I saw that nighttime photo of the parliament – oh my gosh…Budapest needs to go on my travel list asap!! All your photos have been so incredibly stunning!!!! Take me with you on your travels? :)

Hi Amanda! I was just talking about this with my sister–she’s interested in taking a European river cruise with her husband, but she’s concerned the overall passenger age will be too old (i.e. they’ll be the youngest on board by about 30 years). What was your impression from the cruise you took? Were there other passengers around your age?

Do you ever feel nervous traveling outside of the US? I have been to a few places – Mexico, Jamaica – but it was years ago. I just wonder how it is traveling these days with such heightened terrorism risks.

    1. Amanda

Not really :) I try to be aware of my surroundings and mindful of my belongings, but most places I’ve visited are very, very safe. In face some of the places I’ve visited are some of the safest cities in the world, like Copenhagen, Munich, Amsterdam, and Vienna. Happy travels! :)

So glad to see you visited my FAVORITE European city, Bratislava! My brother-in-law is the U.S. Ambassador to Slovakia, and my sister is actively involved in their public health initiative. It’s a fascinating city, with a small town feel to it. Did you see the upside-down building that is their public radio station? Funny building! And now you’ve got me wanting a Gate 1 Travel cruise. One more item for my bucket list!

  16. Jennifer @ Show Me the Yummy

Oh my gosh! What an amazing looking trip :) I went on a Western Caribbean cruise and the food was outstanding! I’ve been anxiously awaiting my next cruise, but haven’t decided where it should be, this definitely gave me some more inspiration!
