Cinque Terre, Part 2

Manarola

Manarola and Riomaggiore, Cinque Terre, Italy

Hey guys! I’m so excited to share the rest of the Cinque Terre photos with you today! Today I’ve got our photos from Manarola and Riomaggiore, the two southern-most villages in the Cinque Terre. If you missed Monday’s photos featuring the other three villages, here it is! Tons more Cinque Terre photos there. :) So sorry about that. I was going through a little server upgrade, but it’s all good now. :)

Manarola and Riomaggiore, Cinque Terre, Italy

I am absolutely smitten with these beautiful, tiny villages.

The ocean, the fresh air, the small town charm, and of course all the fun, fun colors.

This scene in Manarola is the first thing I ever remember seeing about Cinque Terre — Rainbow colored homes sitting on a cliff above crystal clear waters.

    Amanda I love your photos!
I belong to a group of art quilters. Southern Fiber Artist.
We would love to use one of your photos to make an Art Quilt.
We always ask for permission before we use any photo that’s other than our own.
We would blow up your photo divide it into 3 or 4 sections, then each quilter creates their slice then we join them back together.
Let me know what you think.
    Thanks,

Great pictures Kevin and Amanda! Where is the best place to stay in Riomaggiore that isn’t too expensive? The closest hostels seem to be in La Spezia, is Airbnb the way to go?

Hi! I’m Natasha – a British artist living in Granada, Spain. I specialise in landscapes, cities and towns. I was looking for a picture of Cinque Terre to inspire a painting and I found the perfect one on this post! I’ve linked to it from my site. You can see it here: http://www.natashaphillipsart.com/portfolio/riomaggiore-cinque-terre-italy/ I’d love to credit you on Instagram and Facebook too if you’d like. Can you send me up-to-date links to your profiles? Thanks for your brilliant photos, I really enjoyed reading about your trip.

    All the best,

    Natasha

    Hi Amanda,

I am planning a trip to Italy with my parents and came across your blog site. Your photos are stunning!!!  Wondering if I could pick your brain:  aside from stops in Rome, Florence, Venice, I can’t decide if we should go to Cinque Terre or Amalfi coast., with a stop in Pompei. Have you been to Amalfi (Positano)? If so, which would you recommend, Cinque Terre or Amalfi?  We are going end of October.

    Many thanks,
    Sharon

Amazing blog! My finace and I are in process of planning our honeymoon and have Cinque Terre as our top destination. We were wondering: What town would you recommend is best (most centralized) to see all the other towns? Did you do any hiking after the sunset set to get back to the town you were staying at, or is there a train connecting everything together? We want to get the most out of this place and only staying two days. Please let us know if you have any other reccomendations. Thanks!!

Hi! I’ve come across your blog while looking for some information on Cinque Terre. I’m stunned by the amazing photos you took and quite jealous I have to wait another month to go there. Could you reccommend some nice and not very expensive places to stay for the night in all of those amazing villages? Thanks.

Your pictures are STUNNING and they beat the postcard pictures of Cinque Terre that I saw there. I went there alone last May by train from Rome as my local travel agency cancelled my group tour. The effort was worth it as I felt I was having dreams of being in a magical medieval colorful place…except that it was REAL. Keep taking your unforgettable pictures and thank you for sharing them!

    Hi Amanda, Hi Kevin,

My family and I have been planning ahead for next summer, and Cinque Terre seems to be our most likely target. I have two daughters (10 1nd 12),and it will be a family trip for us. I wondered what would be a good place for leaving our car before taking the train to one for the five towns?

  11. Laura Hernandez

Beautiful photos! I will be visiting Cinque Terre in a few weeks and look forward to snapping some photos half as lovely as yours. Thank you for sharing!

  12. Ellice

I found your pictures of Riomaggiore, Italy. Would it be possible to purchase one of them? They are absolutely beautiful!

When I saw this city picture for the first time, I actually thought its a work of great imagination and in real it does not exist!

Here is the guide I use:

Sunset Times in May for Genoa, Italy

I couldn’t find the exact Cinque Terre location, but I could find the times for Genoa and Rome, and Cinque Terre is kind of in the middle, so that will give you a general idea. Then when you get closer to May, you can Google “what time is sunset in la spezia?” and it will tell you what time sunset is that night. (La Spezia is the nearest town to Cinque Terre.) Hope this helps!

I went to Cinque Terra back in the spring of 2003. I met a girl in my hostel and the two of us walked through 4 of the villages together. I then walked to the 5th one myself on a different day. It is so beautiful there. When I went, it was cloudy, so I didn’t see everything as colourful as when it is sunny, but it was still stunning. Here is a photo of me while there: http://blacklambphotography.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/travel-photography-self-portrait-cinque-terra11.jpg

    Hey guys,
    Fantastic blog and amazing pictures!

Am planning a trip to Cinque Terre sometime in mid-April next year. I was wondering if it was easy to get to some of the vantage points for photographing the villages ? I understand that most of the hiking trails are still closed and I am planning to take the trains between the villages.

Any pointers to reach such vantage points would be greatly appreciated :)

  16. Jill

Hello, I was just admiring your beautiful photos of Cinque Terre, and was wondering what type of camera you have. We are going to Europe in a few months and our current camera doesn’t take great photos. Thank you!

  17. Mohammed

    Amanda,

Absolutely gorgeous pics. I’ll be there in a few weeks and am also an avid photographer. You said the “this is THE place to see the sunset.” Could you tell me the place please? Is it on the trail, from some vantage point, etc?

    Really appreciate it!

    Thanks!

    1. Amanda

Hi Mohammed! Congratulations on your trip! If you go down by the boats in Riomaggiore, you’ll see a sidewalk up to the left that leads to a deck / overlook. You can get a great view of the city and the sunset from here. :) Safe travels!

These photos are dizzyingly beautiful! I came across one of them on Pinterest, and have been clicking through your photos since! One question – Do you sell these or have them available to print somewhere? My daughter is looking for colorful artwork for her dorm room and she loved these.

    Thank you!
    Janet

I did yoga on that cliff to the left of Manarola! We stayed with Nicoletta right of the main drag there. Where did you guys stay while you were there? It was one of my most favorite places I’ve EVER been!

Merry Xmas from Down Under. mwah, heather x

Oh my! That’s all I can say….just oh my! Your pictures are absolutely stunning. We visited this region of Italy 3 years ago, but my pictures look nothing like yours. Would you mind if I asked you what post-processing program you use? I also shoot with a 7D although I was using a 40D when we traveled to Cinque Terra. I currently use Aperture but was wondering about purchasing Lightroom. I want my photos to look like yours! I shoot with the 17-55 lens for most of my landscapes.

  26. Jaclyn

Unbelievably gorgeous photos! I could only dream of taking such beautiful pictures. I totally admire your work, always stunning!

  27. Natalie

BEAUUUUTIFUL. What did you eat while you were there?! I would love to have seen up close and personal cafe shots of food and streets!

  33. Kendra

Amanda & Kevin- I was just looking at your photographs of Cinque Terre & my 5 year old son came up and said what’s that? I told him it was Cinque Terre in Italy. He then said “I wish I could be there.” My thoughts exactly. You captured it perfectly.

  34. Yvette

I am lovig all of your Italy photos!! I am headed there next Spring and am thinking aout Chinque Terre. Was it easy to get around from town to town? A lot of hiking or just stairs everywhere? Do tell!

    1. Amanda

Hi Yvette! It was very easy to get from town to town. There’s a local train that runs every 30-60 minutes and it’s only a 5 minute ride to the next town. The easiest train schedule to read is the big board at the station, although they have small printed ones to carry with you. If you’re in Monterosso or Riomaggiore (the northern and southernmost towns) make sure you get on a local train. There are fast trains that stop in both of those places that don’t make the local stops to the villages inbetween. Get a Cinque Terre card that will serve as your train ticket AND trail pass. Most of the hiking trails were closed due to the floods. The one between Riomaggiore and Manarola is open — very short and paved all the way. Highly recommended! The one between Monterosso and Vernazza is open as well. I think the rest were closed. There are lots of stairs and hills everywhere, especially in Corniglia! :) After we left Cinque Terre, we swore we would never climb another flight of stairs in our lives. :) I think stairs will always remind me of Cinque Terre now, lol! :)

    2. Yvette

Thank you so much Amanda! This certainly kicks off my homework on the upcoming trip! I know the stairs might kill me, but I cannot let that hold me back… right? Look how beautiful it is!

  35. Niki

Hi Amanda – Your pictures are amazing. I’m planning a trip to Cinque Terre in September and am even more excited to go after seeing your pictures. I saw your post about staying at Hotel Cinque Terre, did you stay at any other hotels you’d suggest?

  36. Nicole

Okay, I’m going here, it’s settled. One day I will be there and watch that sunset…to die for! Una Vista Magnifca!

  37. Stephany

Amanda- I loved seeing them on Instagram, but I am in love with them here. Also, the yummy treats you got to sneak in! :D The pictures are absolutely gorgeous!!! I am so glad you and your husband got the honor to see that! Such a beauty! Thank you for sharing!!! :)

  38. Melissa M

Oh, my gosh! I’m so glad that I am NOT there – more than one day in Cinque Terre and I would get a job and buy a house – not necessarily in that order!

  39. Mitch

Will you be bored if I repeat what is on everyone’s mind? Those pictures are absolutely gorgeous.
We visited the Cinque Terre in the rain and did not see what you saw, although we were just happy to be there.
Again, your shots and the town, are gorgeous!

  40. Ruby Showalter

These pictures are heavenly!!! I so want to be there…and it’s going on my list of places to see! Thank you for sharing and keep them coming!!!

  41. Erin @ Texanerin Baking

You were so lucky with the weather! Your pictures are beautiful. as always. They should use your shots on postcards instead of whatever they’re selling now. It seems like in Europe they’re using 20 year old pictures and the only exception so far has been Iceland. Weird. And yay, the Tuscany pictures are coming! I’ve been waiting. :)

  42. Karen

Now I can see all the beautiful photos! Thanks, Amanda for fixing the glitch! :) You’re the bee’s knees! – Karen

  43. Alexandra

Hi Amanda! I’m so glad you had an amazing time on your trip! I just wanted to ask how you got your pictures to be so vibrant! Your blues are so blue!! My pictures always turn out so dull and someone told me its all about post-processing! Do you do HDR photos or just post processing with Lightroom or Photoshop? Either way, they are amazing! Keep up the AWESOME work :) so jealous of your skills lol

Thanks Amanda for the info, I realized after I posted my comment that I had seen something on your blog about getting sharper photos on the internet/blog. Can’t wait to try it, also downloaded the photo effects I found too.

Loving me some sunset photos! All of the photos from your trip to Italy have been stunning. Good job!

  47. Becky @ Farmgirl Paints

holy cow are these even real? i can’t imagine a place so colorful and vibrant. i’m officially in love and adding it to my places to see before i die list. gorgeous!!

  48. Jodi

Just a wonderful set of photos. Looks like you enjoyed every minute. The sunset was my favorite. Sometime you should share with us how you post photos and keep them sharp at the same time. I post photos on the web and they loose their sharpness and clarity.
But thanks for sharing these photos, they are simply amazing!!!
