How To Make Ice Cream Cake (Step by Step)

First we’re going to start with the Oreo cookie crust. Finely crush 25 Oreos in a food processor, blender, or a ziploc bag. Save the rest of the Oreo cookies for later.

Place the crumbs in the bottom of a 9″ pie plate.

And pour in 6 tablespoons of melted butter.

Stir the Oreo cookie crumbs and the butter together, then press into the bottom and up the sides of the pie plate.

This thick Oreo cookie crust is AMAZING and my absolute favorite part of the ice cream cake. You can certainly buy a pre-made Oreo cookie crust at the grocery store, but this homemade version is SO much better!

Place the crust in the freezer to harden, and in the meantime, we’re going to make our own homemade creamy peanut butter ice cream filling for the cake. This homemade peanut butter ice cream tastes just like peanut butter pie!

In a large bowl, add one can of sweetened condensed milk, then add the vanilla.

Finally whisk in 1/2 cup peanut butter until well combined.

In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream until light and fluffy then fold it into the peanut butter mixture. It’s easier to whip the heavy cream when it’s cold, so be sure to leave it in the refrigerator until you’re ready to whip.

Grab the Oreo crust from the freezer, and pour half of the peanut butter ice cream mixture on top of the frozen Oreo crust.

Here’s the previously un-pictured hot fudge topping. Heat the fudge topping according to the directions on the jar.

This is very tasty! Next time, I will be sure to use a larger and deeper pie pan. The one I used was too shallow and I only had enough room to use about half of the “ice cream” mixture. I ended up making a 2nd pie as I had so much left over. Also, my mixture was so runny by the time that I poured it over the crust that the hot fudge sank right through it. When I served it there was a nice fudge layer right on top of the Oreo crust. It all tasted great but I will do a few things differently next time!

This pie is heaven. :D I want this, but I have to find that Smuckers choco fudge since i dunno if it’s available here in my place :D

I really want to make this, is there anything else I could use besides peanut butter? My husband doesn’t care for the flavor.

    1. Amanda

      Hi Kaylyn,

You could use Biscoff, Nutella, Caramel Ice Cream Topping, cream cheese, or you could just leave the peanut butter out. Hope this helps!

Thanks so much for sharing! This looks SO divine, like all of your other recipes :) I can’t wait to try it out!

I made this for my boyfriends bday, but I used caramel instead of chocolate fudge, as it’s quite hard to get it in uk. It worked really well, making it taste like Snickers. But my god it’s heavy! I cut the usual cake slice for both of us and all we managed to eat was 1/4 of it. Taste divine, but one plate will last us a looong time!

This Looks soooooo amazing!! I made it today for my boyfriend, who will arrive in the evening! I’m soooooo curious about his reaction. Instead of the chocolate fudge topping I used “Schwartau Eis Wunder”, which hardens when you freeze it. I didn’t find such a topping in german Supermarktes, but I think it’s a great alternative!

    Love, Julia

This looks amazing and I make my husband an ice cream cake for his birthday every year… Quick question….I do not have an electric mixer so if I whipped the cream and peanut butter manually would it come out okay? Thanks!

  8. noush

Hi, this looks amazing! I’m making it this weekend but I was wondering if you think I’d be able to make the ice cream part in.my ice dream maker? Thanks!

  9. noush

This looks amazing! I’m making it for my brother inlaw next week! I was wondering if I should mix the ice cream .part of the recipe in my ice cream maker? Do you think it makes a difference?

  10. Nicole

Not sure what my favorite part of this dessert is…the peanut butter, oreos OR that it is not super complicated. I’m not into complicated desserts. This is “find” for sure!

i can’t wait to make this pie, Amanda! your pictures always blow me away. I know you use Lightroom, and I just purchased Lightroom 4. Can’t wait to get it so I can improve my photos. :)

Have tried tons of recipes on this site and loved them all, few have even become staples in our house. I also recommend this site to all my family and friends. However this is the first recipe I have just had to comment on because is tastes so amazing and is very easy to make well worth the extra time on the treadmill!!!!

I made this for my husband’s birthday tomorrow, total surprise, he has no idea! Now next time, I will need a bigger pie dish, the Pyrex glass dish is waaaaay too small, I was practically overflowing! I cannot wait to try it tomorrow and surprise my hubby with this!

  14. Naomi

I made this today for my husband’s birthday! Even the “ice cream batter” was good! I can’t wait to try the whole thing!!!

  15. Naomi

I made this pie late last night and ate almost half it for breakfast this morning :-/ It was amazing! I would like to make it again on a brownie crust instead of a cookie crust…..and with extra fudge!

  16. Carina

I just picked this up at pinterest… if I keep reading your blog, I’m going to die. I LOVE food and I want to make absolutely every recipe that I’ve read on your blog thus far. But when I read about the 5 sticks of butter in the (apparently) best fudge chocolate icing ever, I knew that I could die happily eating one of your creations.

Sooo much to read. Love, love, love it all.

  17. Chelsey

I don’t know if anyone else posted about this. I made this for a BBQ today, and when I made it I had left over peanut butter mix, I put it in cupcake liners and made mini ones. THIS WORKED OUT AMAZING. It helped not having to cut the pie in the hot sun, and each person had their own little pie. It was amazing though! Great recipe.

  18. Rochelle Scott

I made this last Sunday and it was soooooooooo delicious. We ate it every day. It’s a keeper for the recipe box. Thank you!

  19. Libertad Leal

Oh my gravy, this looks delicious! Now, I like PB and I love chocolate, but I don’t necessarily love them together (odd I know), could Nutella be substituted for PB by any chance? Thanks! :)

  20. Amy Fine

I just made this desert today after work. I’m just bummed it takes so long to freeze. It was sooper-dooper easy to make. Mine did not turn out as pretty but I think that has to do with not having a pretty pie plate. All I have is a Pyrex pie plate. My next trip to marshals or target I will be picking up a pretty pie plate. And next time, I might add caramel along with the chocolate, just to make it extra sinful. I cannot wait to sink my teeth into it….for breakfast, wink, wink.

  21. S. Dirks

My husband isn’t really a chocolate fan sometimes- blaspheme, I know. After taking only one bite of this pie, he proclaimed, “This is the best pie I’ve ever had.” Thanks:)

  22. Niki

My boyfriend saw this over my shoulder. He says it looks tasty and that I have to make it for him.

    I completely agree. :)

  23. Jeanette

Wow, this is sinful! I have an amazing PB pie recipe that is always a hit, but next time I am going to make this instead! That crust oh that crust!!! Thanks for sharing!!!

  24. Donna

I don’t know about this – I gained a few pounds just reading the recipe and drooling all over my keyboard! Holy moly! Seriously, how do you eat this stuff and look they way you do – share that with us – please, Please, PLEASE!!!

I have to make it, but not until I have a house full of company so I can cut small pieces for all and we won’t feel so sinfully guilty with calories!! he he he!!!

Thank you and many blessings, Donna

OMG!! That is so drool-worthy!! Why are you torturing me with those delicious desserts, not only here but on Instagram as well? :D

  26. Diane @ Longaberger Lifestyle

Confession time. I am not a PB fan. However….I would make this so all my PB loving friends would be amazed. Okay….now for a really tough question. Could the PB stay in the cupboard and caramel take its place? Please say yes!

  27. Liz (Little Bitty Bakes)

Ah, your dessert recipes never disappoint! I love that there’s no baking of the crust (as there often seems to be with cookie/graham crusts). No need to heat the kitchen this time of year! :)

  28. Tricia Richner

Really? It should be against some sort of international law to post pictures of food that looks this good. I had drool drips running down my monitor screen. . .

  29. Jamie

Oh my goodness! This looks incredible. Thanks for sharing such a crowd pleasing recipe. Will definitely have to make this before the summer is up.

  30. Liz F

After two very successful attempts with your ice cream recipe – this pie is now in my freezer! I am going to have to up my exercise routine…thanks and keep ’em coming!

  31. jill

Sounds fantastic and I agree Amanda that you need a work off the calories section on your blog! It is all so delicious! Thanks for sharing. Can’t wait to make this.

  32. Erin @ Brownie Bites

GAH!! I love everything about this (and I must have your pie plate and measuring spoons immediately) So absolutely sinful. Maybe I’ll just close this post and forget I ever saw it.. yep, it’s out of my mind..excuse me, I need to go to the grocery store to buy some uh, celery. Yeah. Celery.

  33. Lori @ RecipeGirl

    3 things (ok, 5):
    1. I love how the crust is made.
    2. Darling pie plate.
    3. I love to see the products that people choose to use for their recipes… like what kind of peanut butter… and cream containers I’ve never seen before.
    4. omg
    5. I started a diet today :(

  37. grammy@gram-cracker.com/blog

Well, this weeks diet is right out the window now….*sigh* ….and I had such high hopes for it….Ok, here’s the new plan: Make this pie, quickly scarf it down (no sense it letting it linger on the counter) before the hubby finds it (I’m saving him from himself, I’m a giver like that) and then start the diet tomorrow! Yep, that works for me! :)

  38. Karen Skeens

Oh my!!!! I could eat that right now and it’s early in the morning…my husband would die for this!! A must MAKE!!

  39. mia

Wow Amanda, this recipie is amazing! I´ve tried a few of your recipies before and this one is for sure on my 2 do list! Love it! :)

Amanda…this is just a brilliant recipe! WOW!!!

To say I am drooling is an understatement.

I am so happy that you and Jenny had a blast here in San Diego (been following all your instagram and twitter updates) and that you’re now up in the OC having more fun!

    YAY!

Random question…do you do all your blog/site work by yourself? If you have someone you love who helps you, I’d love their contact info. Your site is always just so beautiful :)

Tomorrow is National Day here in Singapore (like their Independence Day) and I’m having a BBQ. I’m going to try and make this for dessert to share! Thanks for the great recipes.
