My Closet

Closet Makeover Organization

This weekend I decided it was time to do something about the overflowing mound of shoes at the bottom of my closet! I couldn’t even get to my clothes without stepping on a stray tennis shoe littering the floor, trying to make it’s escape from the closet.

Closet Makeover Organization

I ended up getting a little small cubby organizer from my local Target to individually house my shoes and maximize the space under my hanging clothes that didn’t reach all the way to the floor.

I originally wanted this shoe cubby from Amazon, but they were temporarily out of stock when I was looking to buy. I like that it’s made for shoes, so it’s tall enough for heels and wide enough to store the shoes side by side, instead of stacked, like mine. Plus the panels snap together, so you could conceivably create any configuration of cubes you wanted to fit the space.

The Target cubby did the trick for an instant fix though, and I certainly like the wood look better than the frosted panes of the other cubby. But I definitely don’t think this one was intended for shoes! It’s a little on the smaller side. My flats and flip flops fit fine, and I could even fit two pairs of flip flops in one cubby. My tennis shoes just barely made it. Size 8. Just in case you were wondering. But my high heels and wedges were just too tall to fit in.

But either way, it did the trick. And it certainly opened up a lot of space on the closet floor! I’m loving that.

I should probably work on the whole matching hangers thing now.

While you’re working on the matching hangers – it would be a great time to also hang items by length and color. Give more room on the floor to hang longer items together and it’s easier to find items when they are color coded! The matching hangers allows the items to all hang, at least from the hang bar, the same distance. Trust me…it’s worth it and it looks good!

Niiiice!!! Me and my hubby used to have designated sides but somehow they just became one big jumble! Maybe one day I will try to reclaim my side!!! For now I am happy with my refrigerator organize-orama…. Thekiddsaga.blogspot.com. Love your blog by the way!

    Hi Amanda
They have now built the closet in the new master bedroom, it is 4×8 and am just ready to go to buy the organizers. What do you think of the wire ones. do they hold up to holding your cloths without bending?
    thanks

In my last closet I used the nooks from Target as well. I used three. You can slide one of the dividers out to accomodate boots or higher shoes as the season watt ants. Love reading your blog.

I just bought one of those cubbies at Target last week! I am using it for housing scrapbook supplies in my office closet. The openings are just right for all the teeny tiny scrap booking items that get misplaced.

Love the colors in your closet & how organized everything is. Matching hangers will make it look magnificent. I use 2 kinds of hangers the white plastic like you have but I love the ones with the velvet on them because stuff doesn’t slide off. Like these… http://www.amazon.com/Closet-Complete-Ultra-Velvet-Hangers/dp/B0037KMSRI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1326893880&sr=8-1 Just have to be careful with them b/c the metal hook part can break off the top if you are too rough with them. My kids have broken a few. But I love how slim they are & how nice tops stay on. I no longer have a small pile of tops on the floor.

Great job! That’s funny. Before I finished the blog, I said to myself that matching hangers would be great. I like those huggies on HSN…

I love these hangers I bought at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. They are called Slimline hangers. They are slim, non-slip, have indents, and have a tiny accessory bar. I’ve changed my closet over to just those now.

I use that Target shoe cubby in my art area right on the end of my desk next to where I sit, perfect for storing the things I use all the time.

You should go online at hsn.com and look at Joy Mangano hangers. They are like velvet and clothes do not slip off, but the thing that will shock you is how much more room you have in your closet. It will give you at least a third more space to hang all the new clothes your will want to buy. They are great and they come in many colors to match your decor. You will love them!!

Wow….I’m jealous….been waiting for years for my closet to look like this. I really need to go through my shoes too. Your closet looks wonderfully organized. Kudos to you my dear. Hugs, Becky

Love your closet!! I had the shoe organizer you didn’t get from Amazon – you definitely got lucky. We HATED it. It was a pain to put together, it didn’t hold much, it was impossible to dust and really flimsy. We replaced it a few months ago with a shoe organizer from IKEA that looks like furniture. And I *may* have destroyed the other with a hammer to get it back apart… ;) So I think you definitely made the better choice with your Target shoe rack — it even looks nicer!! :) Good luck with the hanger project. I’ve only ever had white… I couldn’t live with a mis-match of the hangers in my closet! :)

I have the one you wanted from Amazon and I have to say you will probably be happier with the one you got from Target. The Amazon one can be made taller or shorter/longer, but it is flimsy and really only works for my flip flops, flats, and (barley) tennis shoes (also a size 8). It was a hand-me-down from my SIL when they moved so I can’t complain, but if I were buying again I would definitely go for the more sturdy version you have :)

Love your shoe storage solution! You should treat yourself to those matching hangers – it’s fun and just one of those little touches that makes things feel “special.” The Container Store has lots of pretty colors.

I definitely like the wood look better too but am bummed to hear the shoes don’t seem to fit right. I was looking at that organizer not too long ago. I do love your closet though!

thanks for the organizational inspiration! perhaps I’ll take some time to clean up my closet today..Lord knows it needs it ;)

Your closet looks so fun and inviting! I love the shoe organizers on Amazon. I have the kind that hangs on the door and the bottom unit always falls off leaving my shoes all over the floor. Plus, it limits the opening capacity for the door.

I am currently in the throws of making over my closet! One thing I started a long time ago….I must have all white hangers. But at one point, I think in a desperate need of hangers, I purchased a back of dark orange ones. And they still bug me. To me, matching hangers help make my closet feel more organized. I want my clothes to provide the color, not the hangers. :)

You could color coordinate your hangers – white for pants, pink for tops and blue for sweaters… and then hang your clothes in a graduated color progression in each set. It would be functional and pretty when you opened it… lol.

Your closet looks amazing! I have the same target cubbies and agree… they are a very small size for shoes. But what else could it possibly be used for?! I’ve been trying to find a better way to organize my closet. So frustrating and time consuming!! :]

I am jealous of your closet : ) I have to share with my husband! But, the one thing I did that I love, is invested in “huggable hangers” – I get them in bulk on hsn.com but they can be found in stores now too. If you can get them for $1 a piece or less, that is a good price. They are excellent quality – nothing falls off, and they look uniform and pretty and save space! Highly recommend!

I love how neat and organized your closet is. I really need some shelves to fold and store sweaters and other tops that won’t wrinkle. Love the shoe cubby. That is a great idea!

    Amada,
Your closet looks great! I have to tell you about something I discovered a few years ago b/c I know it will CHANGE YOUR LIFE…or at least your closet! HUGGABLE HANGERS by Joy Mangano. They are AMAZING!!! They are velvety, thin and fabulous! You can buy them at Target or at HSN (www.hsn.com). I prefer to buy mine from HSN b/c of the variety of colors, accessories, etc. Please check them out and let me know what you think. I check HSN on TV every once in a while, just hoping I’ll stumble across the showings for them. I become absolutely mesmerized! I really think you will too. I even take them on vacation and girls trips with me. My girlfriends used to make fun of me – until they saw how wonderful they are. They ALL have some now too. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts!!!
