I’m dreaming of a white Christmas…

White Christmas in Alabama 2010

We woke up on Saturday to a white Christmas!

White Christmas in Alabama 2010

What a wonderful surprise! This is the first white Christmas either of us have ever seen.

White Christmas in Alabama 2010

Even small amounts of snow are rare ’round these parts in Alabama, so any time there’s snow it’s always a fun treat.

White Christmas in Alabama 2010

But there’s something that makes it especially magical on Christmas.

White Christmas in Alabama 2010

The weather called for a slight chance of flurries in the afternoon, so you can imagine our surprise when we woke up to find everything completely covered in snow!

White Christmas in Alabama 2010

Massive amounts of powdery snow had quietly fallen in the night. I don’t think we’ve ever had this much!

White Christmas in Alabama 2010

It snowed these big, fat, beautiful flakes all day.

Boy, were Miley and Howie in for a shock!

Snowed in for Christmas.

Kevin & Amanda White Christmas 2010

Time for cinnamon buns, hot chocolate, a fire, and toasted marshmallows to warm up! This unexpected treat put me in the mood to watch Holiday Inn, so after this we all smooshed in the big chair and piled under some blankets.

In other news, a state of emergency has now been declared over the crisis in the guest room. I think I’ll just close this door and come back next year.

Happy Holidays!

As always – your photographs are absolutely breathtaking. It’s odd for me to think that there are some places in the USA that *don’t* get white Christmases – but then Christmas for us in South Africa is dang in the middle of the hottest part of the Summer – so that’s even weirder right?

And on a side note, I have been reading your blog for a couple years and never knew you were in Alabama…to me that’s so rare! Anywhoo..love the photos!

Beautiful pictures! When snow surprises us all of us become children. There is such magic about snow. Dogs like to play endlessly in the snow, it is such fun. Happy holidays! By the looks of it Santa Claus left the contents of his sleigh at your place!

Good morning Amanda,
The pictures are just beautiful…brought a smile to my face. I am here in Florida and for us it is freezing here today, burrr! Anyway, I have never seen snow and looking at your pictures made me feel like I was right there. Looks like you had a beautiful Christmas and hope one day I can experience the beauty of a white Christmas. The picture of you and Kevin is just adorable and you look so very pretty. How wonderful for you guys! We live in GA (Columbus, not far from ya’ll) and only got a few flurries after dark Sat night. It was the 1st time we got any snow here on Christmas day in 120 years! I can still count it even thought it didn’t stick, right? Congrats.

Here in Raleigh we had to wait until the evening of Christmas for the snow to start falling and then we woke up to the same scene the day after Christmas! Isn’t it beautiful? We have 6 1/2 inches to play in that will hang around for much of the week. Enjoy! So what did the pups think?

Having a “white Christmas” was, indeed, magical. The strange thing is that it snowed all day, stuck to the ground at my house, yet 15 minutes down the road to my dad’s house and there was only snow falling- not sticking! Birmingham is so weird.
I hope you and Kevin had a wonderful Christmas this year!!

Amanda, Do you have any great appetizer recipes to fix for a New Year’s Eve party ? I’m always looking for new ideas. I usually fix Crockpot Cocktail Weiners but wanted to take something new this year. Happy New Year by the way !!! Thanks. :) Here is my recipe:

COCKTAIL WIENERS

1 lb. cocktail wieners
1 (12 oz.) bottle chili sauce
1 (8 oz.) jar grape jelly

In pot, combine jelly and chili sauce. Bring to a boil; stir. Drop in wieners and reduce heat. Ready to serve in 15 minutes. Serve in chafing dish. YUM.

Such a beautiful Christmas!!! I love the snow. I live in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula though so I’m pretty used to it & have come to expect it each year. I was getting a little nervous this year since we didn’t have any & it was fairly late in Dec. Then we got hit with several inches at once. now we have a mini sledding hill for my 4, 6, & 8 year old. Such fun. I bet your dogs went crazy, either loving it or hating it eh?

It was funny we got about an inch or so here locally but drove 15 mins to my boyfriend’s parent’s home and they had nothing. It’s so funny how that works but the flurries lasted all day it was like having a bit of home with me here in the South.

P.S. My boyfriend’s mom made the sweetest comment… she said that it felt like God was smiling down on us for our Holiday. It still makes me smile and well up a little typing that, because it’s so true.
