One evening last month, I invited a few girls over to help me eat the enormous amounts of chocolate I amassed in New York over my birthday weekend. We drank hot chocolate, made s’mores, and stuffed ourselves silly with french truffles and 14 different kinds flavored chocolate bars. In between all the chocolate tasting and sugar-induced giggling, my dear friend and neighbor Stephanie taught us how to paint a cute little chocolate macaron in a giant cafe-style coffee mug. You can see a recap of our evening here. It was a seriously perfect night, and we knew right then we couldn’t stop there. We’d simply have to do it again. Soon.

So this Tuesday we got the gang together again, along with some new gals, and this time our theme was cupcakes! Stephanie created a fabulous pink cupcake for us to paint, and I came up with six fun flavors of mini cupcakes for us to sample.

I had way too much fun coming up with all the different flavors of cupcakes! I drew inspiration from my most favorite and unforgettable cupcakes I’ve tasted and photographed over the years. I made the frostings the night before the party, but on the day of the party I baked, frosted and decorated all six batches of cupcakes. I felt like I had been training for this my whole life! I was humming the Rocky theme song all day. And I am not lying when I tell you that when Stephanie arrived, thirty minutes before the other guests were to arrive, she found me still in my pajamas, flour on my face, my hair in a sock bun, and without a stitch of makeup. I yanked her in the house and handed her a bag of frosting while I ran to the back to throw on clothes and mascara. Thank goodness for BFFs arriving early. We literally put the last sprinkle on the last cupcake just as the first guest arrived. Whew!

By the way, thank you so much to Stephanie for taking the first four photos here! It wasn’t until this point in the evening that I’d collected myself enough to pick up a camera. I didn’t even have my iPhone with me. I can’t believe I didn’t start to twitch!

Anyway! Here’s our fabulous group of ladies! From left to right we have Dolly (Stephanie’s Mom), Myra @ My Blessed Life, Brekke @ My Sweet Home, Erin @ The Pigbear, yours truly, and Stephanie @ All Artful. An amazingly talented group of Alabama bloggers all under one roof — I felt so incredibly lucky to be this close to this much talent!

You can see it in their paintings too. Clockwise from top left are Brekke, Dolly, Myra, and Erin’s paintings. How talented are these gals?? I love how each and every one of their sweet personalities shines through their artwork.

Oh yah, and here’s my little pink cupcake :)

The day before the party I shared this photo on Facebook with you guys. These are the four frostings I used for our cupcakes. They’re my absolute favorites and they are out of this world ridiculous.. Can I tell you how hard it was not to eat these with a spoon?? :)

I would love to share these cupcake and frosting recipes with you guys next week. They’re decadent, rich, dreamy, and naughty. You have to try ‘em. Since there are six recipes, I’ll post the first recipe tomorrow to kick us off, and then I’ll post a new cupcake recipe every day next week. We’ll decree it hence be known as Cupcake Week, officially!

See you tomorrow with the first cupcake! xoxo

Hey guys! So, oh my gosh. Have y’all heard of Dylan’s Candy Bar in NYC? Oh my gosh. It is this giant candy store with three entire floors filled with every kind of chocolate and candy you can imagine! It is all about the chocolate from candy bars and truffles to chocolate fashion, jewelry, and chocolate flavored lip gloss and scented lotions. There’s even a chocolate restaurant upstairs! It is chocolate, chocolate, chocolate as far as the eye can see. It even has a fun little section with celebrities who have visited with their photo and favorite kind of candy. Such a fun little candy shop!

So when I saw this giant spinning rack, bigger than I could reach my arms around, glowing with a light from above, filled with over a dozen different flavored candy bars in rainbow colored wrappers, I knew right then and there. I had to try every single one of them. And so I wouldn’t eat all 14 candy bars in one sitting, I invited a few friends over to help me taste test them. I supplemented the chocolate with more chocolate, in the form of Cold Stone Creamery hot chocolate with french vanilla marshmallows, chocolate-filled Trader Jo Jo’s, chocolate covered peanut butter filled pretzels, and french truffles from NYC which is, hands down, the best chocolate I’ve ever had.

Now let’s get on to the taste testing!

Each candy bar was stuffed with fun flavors and fillings and offered its own unique, delicious taste. Pictured above are caramel and S’mores. Can you see the marshmallows and graham crackers in the S’mores bar?? :)

Here are the flavors we sampled:

Red Velvet Cake – Filled with cream cheese frosting!

Peanut Butter – Stuffed with creamy peanut butter.

Caramel – Tasted like a Rolo!

Banana Cream Pie – Banana flavored chocolate with bits of vanilla wafers.

Espresso – Coffee flavored chocolate, with little bits of crunchy coffee beans. I really liked this one, but it was not a crowd favorite. The general consensus was that the coffee flavor was too strong! Oh well, more for me. :)

Hazelnut – Tasted just like a Nutella chocolate bar!

Milk Toffee Crunch – Milk chocolate with a nice crunch. Reminded me of a Nestle crunch bar.

S’mores – Loaded with little bits of marshmallow and graham cracker! This one is the fun of a S’mores stuffed into a candy bar.

Tiramisu – I think this one was the crowd favorite! Rich, delicious chocolate stuffed with an ultra creamy and sweet coffee flavored filling.

Cookies and Cream – This one is like the creamy filling of an Oreo stuffed with little bits of crushed Oreo cookie.

Malted Milk Chocolate – I wanted to love this one, I loved malted milk chocolate, but it was not a favorite.

Naughty Devil’s Food Cake – Oooh, this one was another favorite! Rich, Beligian dark chocolate stuffed with gooey chocolate fudge frosting. This one’s a winner.

Nice Angel Food Cake – Sweet, innocent, pure white chocolate.

Serendipity’s Frozen Hot Chocolate Bar – This one is the flavor of Serendipity’s frozen hot chocolate… in a bar! I picked this one up at Serendipity which is just down the street from Dylan’s.

Let’s meet our fabulous chocolate taste-testers. Here we have Brekke, Stephanie, Dolly, and Kim.

After completely stuffing ourselves silly with all 14 flavors of chocolate, we had a nice sugar high and a major case of slap happiness going on! It was the perfect time to start our painting. The amazingly talented Stephanie from All Artful, created a gorgeous picture of a decadent chocolate macaron for us to paint. Now I have never painted anything in my entire life, not even an art class in high school! But Stephanie held our hands through the whole process with her easy to follow step-by-step instruction.

S’mores break! After we got the outline of our macaron painted we took a quick S’mores break while our backgrounds dried.

I found these fun chocolate & vanilla swirl marshmallows that I knew would be perfect for our taste testing party!

Thanks so much to Kim for taking these gorgeous S’mores photos. She grabbed my camera and went to town.

Now I don’t know about you, but I am a huge fan of Ritz crackers with toasted marshmallows! It’s the perfect combo of salty and sweet. You gotta try this.

I also had some fun spreads for us to try with our marshies, I think this Speculoos Cookie Butter from Trader Joe’s was the winner! This is how Trader Joe’s does Biscoff.

I found these cute little snowman-shaped french vanilla flavored marshmallows that we used in our hot chocolate earlier. I had to toast one of these little guys!

Now back to our painting! It’s time for the finishing touches. On the left is Kim’s gorgeous macaron, and you can probably guess who the hot pink one on the right belongs to. :)

Stephanie gave us lots of options for customizing our paintings — adding an Eiffel Tower, Parisian accent stamps, and french macaron calligraphy. Here’s Kim’s finished painting.

This one belonged to Dolly. How amazing does her Eiffel Tower look?? That was not a stamp, all these talented ladies painted their Eiffel Towers all on their own. Wow!

Here’s mine. It’s so me. Pink and simple.

I love how Brekke’s turned out! So gorgeous and collage-like.

And here’s Stephanie’s! She effortlessly painted this one while standing up and holding the canvas in one hand and the paint brush in the other while showing us each stroke step by step. You can also see her painting in the very first photo of this post which we used as a guide for our painting party.

This little fuzzy boston terrier tee is so fun! I used the Silhouette craft cutter for this project and I was seriously shocked at how quick and easy it was to put together. Usually I can muster up the energy to make something once, and then I’m done- no more for awhile. But I could definitely see myself making a few more of these custom shirts! :)

I used the flocked heat transfer material for a soft and fuzzy texture for the BT. I was little concerned at how clean the cut was going to be since the material is so thick – would it really cut all the way through? But the backing peeled right off. Whew!

You can even layer the flocked heat transfer material right on top of one another. Tip: I found it was easier to peel off the backing if I let it cool for a few minutes after ironing.

The flocked heat transfer material is really soft and velvety! Not at all rough or “felt” like.

Silhouette: Trace Outline Tutorial – Here’s the tutorial I used to get the outline of the boston terrier. You can even use your own photo!

Silhouette: Heat Transfer Starter Guide (PDF) – And here’s how to use the flocked heat transfer material.

Boston Terrier Template (ZIP) – You can also download the boston terrier template I used if you want! Just in case you have been blessed with the terrorizing stinkiness of a BT. Or maybe a frenchie? Or cutie-smooshy bulldog? The files have even already been mirror-imaged for cutting.

If you don’t have a Silhouette yet, you could also use this template to cut the pattern from old t-shirts and sew them on to make a brand new tee – like I did with my original boston terrier shirt.

Or you could check back on Friday. I have some very special Black Friday fun planned! :)

Have a great Thanksgiving!

This little ringlet scarf made out of old t-shirts is so fun for fall! There’s no sewing involved (hallelujah!), and you can make it while sitting in front of the TV in less time than it takes to watch a really good, trashy show on E.

Since I have an abundance of orange and blue Auburn shirts (and we go to a lot of the crisp, fall football games) I decided to go with Auburn colors. This scarf goes together so fast and is basically free to make – it’s perfect to wear in support of your favorite team! :)

The best part about this cute scarf is that the only supplies you need to make it are a few old tshirts and a pair of scissors. That’s it!

So grab a few tees in your favorite colors and start by cutting off the hem. We’ll be using it later!

Then cut the shirts into strips about 3/4″ wide. I cut 8 strips from each shirt for a total of 32.

Give the loops a nice big stretch.

And wrap them around you hand.

…31 more times.

Now take those hems and cut them into strips about 5″ long. Use those to tie all your loops together…

Into one long chain.

That’s it! You now have a cute, comfy, and ultra cozy t-shirt scarf! :) I first saw this scarf on Cut out and Keep. Such a cute site – so many fun projects there!

Happy Fall… And have a great weekend! :)

Hi friends! I’m running around San Francisco this weekend, trying to keep up with Jenny at Picky Palate at the BlogHer food event! :) While I’m away, Jenny at The Box and The “B” is taking over my blog for a fun fall tutorial. Take it away, Jenny!

I am so excited that Amanda is trusting me to take over her blog today. I was the lucky winner of the L.A. trip contest and was taken on a whirlwind vacation with Amanda. We had such a great time in L.A. together; I don’t think words can describe it. Our trip started our friendship, and it continues to grow daily. A couple of weekends ago we had another adventure together in Atlanta. We hit up all the eatery hot spots, shopped, got pampered and ended the day with a fun double date with our hubbies.

During our countless conversations, I was telling Amanda how I enjoy recreating items I see in magazines or stores for less. When I was telling her this, I could see the wheels turning in her head… then she asked if I would do a tutorial for her blog. At first I was tempted to say, “Are you crazy? NO!” but then, how can you say no to someone as sweet as Amanda. So here I am, my very first blog post ever and I’m nervous… so bear with me!

Fall is my absolute FAVORITE season. How could it not be? Pumpkins, leaves changing color, cool crisp air, being outdoors… what’s not to love? I normally make pumpkins that are completely glittered in different colors, but this year I thought it would be fun to make a design on the pumpkins. I got this idea from a magazine, but they wanted over $100 for these pumpkins! I don’t think so! With my frugal mind I figured I could make them for a lot less and just as cute.

For my pumpkins I used:

Elmer’s Glue

Black Glitter

Plastic Pumpkin (found at Michaels)

Paint Brush

Sharpie Pen

The first thing I did was draw swirls on my pumpkin with a sharpie pen.

Then I went back over the sharpie with Elmer’s Glue.

Be warned… it starts to drip so you better work fast!

Take your glitter and pour it all over the glue. (I only did one swirl at a time.)

Since my swirls didn’t come out perfect at first, I used a paintbrush to brush away glue and glitter, and clean up the lines.

I think the top of the pumpkin looks really cool with the glitter design.

Once all the swirls are dried, I put glue all over the stem and glittered.

I probably spent a total of $15 on both of these pumpkins. That’s a lot better than $100 for the ones I saw in the magazine, that’s for sure!

I hope everyone enjoys making these pumpkins as much as I did!

Jenny has a brand new blog at The Box and the B where she blogs about her love of decorating and DIY projects, as well as cooking, traveling, and hiking with her boston terrier Bella. Thanks for sharing this darling fall project, Jenny!

_____________________________________________

Keep up with me while I’m in San Francisco on Twitter and Facebook – I’m posting live updates along the way. I love the idea of a camera strap slipcover that can easily be changed out with new seasons and colors. And although my sewing machine usually runs and hides when it sees me glance in its general direction, this cute slipcover was pretty easy to tackle.

Wanna make one? It wasn’t too bad… promise! Come on, I’ll show you. :)

Cut 2 strips of fabric for your camera strap. You’ll want to add 1″ to the length and width of the camera strap you’ll be covering.

For the length, I gave myself a little extra room for the slipcover to hang over – I measured from the middle of the X’s on the leather ends of each strap.

For the width, measure at the widest part of the strap on the leather ends.

My measurements were 24″ x 1.75″, so I cut 2 strips of 25″ x 2.75″.

Turn the short sides of the strap fabric in 1/4″ and press. When pressing the second strip, make sure the ends line up so both strips are the same length.

Hem the short sides you just pressed, back-stitching at the beginning and end.

(That’s the button that looks like a U-turn.)

Line up the two strips and pin – right sides together.

Since the width of my camera strap is 1.75″, I want my slipcover to be 2 inches wide. Use a ruler and make a pencil mark so you know where to hem so you’ll have 2″ in the middle.

This centering ruler came in handy. If you can get a picture of it upside down, even better.

Hem just one long side of the strap, back-stitching at the beginning and end.

Embrace the dust!

See? Just one side. Remove pins and set aside.

Now if you did want to go ahead and stitch the other side…

You’d have a very basic slipcover. Easy! You could find some super fun fabric and change this out all the time.

But today we want to add ruffles.

Cut a strip of fabric for the ruffle. You’ll want it to be the same width and double the length of your camera strap.

I cut mine 2″ x 42″.

(My fabric wasn’t quite long enough to double the length exactly, but it was just fine.)

Fold in the long sides of the fabric in 1/4″ and press. Now this can be kind of tricky, so I used a piece of cardstock to help keep a straight edge.

Hem the long sides of the ruffle fabric. I used a zig-zag stitch to add a little fun texture.

But you could use a straight stitch too. If you’re going with the zig-zag stitch, hem the fabric right side up – I think it looks better. :)

Sew a basting stitch (that’s the longest stitch your machine will do) down the middle of the ruffle fabric, leaving a long string at the end.

Now grab that camera strap fabric, open it up, and pin the end of the ruffle fabric to the end of the camera strap (on whichever side you want to be the front).

Starting at the other end, find the long strings you left. Grab the bottom string (from the bobbin thread) and gently pull the fabric to gather & ruffle.

Arrange ruffle evenly onto strap, leaving about 1″ on both ends un-ruffled.

Pin and sew into place using a straight stitch right down the middle, back-stitching at beginning and end.

Remove the pins and the basting stitch. Pull the bottom thread out first, like you’re gathering again, then the top thread. Don’t worry, it should come out pretty easily! :)

Now it was looking pretty fabulous with just one ruffle, but I just couldn’t resist… I had to add a second ruffle! :)

To add a second ruffle, cut another strip of ruffle fabric, the same length, but not quite as wide as the previous ruffle.

I cut my second ruffle strip 1.75″ x 42″.

Repeat the previous steps to add the second ruffle. When you are done, you’ll want to sew a straight stitch across the short sides of the slip cover, sewing the ruffles in place at the bottom.

Now fold the slipcover over, right sides together. Find the pencil mark you made, and sew a straight stitch down the long side of the fabric to close the slipcover, back-stitching at the beginning and end.

Turn the slipcover right-side out and slip onto your strap!

You now have a custom, gorgeous, ruffly, feminine camera strap! And it’s a slipcover, so you can change it out as much as you like. :)

Have a great weekend! :)

This fun little shabby chic earring stand, made from an altered picture frame, is a great way to hang and display all your beautiful, dangling earrings. I had the idea for this project after we talked about my love affair with dangly earrings and how to display them. I don’t know about you, but I just love seeing them all hanging in a row! :)

The next day I made this earring frame, and it was so quick, easy, and inexpensive to put together, I knew I had to share it with you! :) I spent a grand total of $5.34 on this project. Plus I got to work with a staple gun. (Thats about as close to a power tool as I get!) ;)

Cost: Less than $10
Time: 30 mins
Supplies: picture frame, 12′ of picture wire, acrylic paint & brush, staple gun (or nails/tacks, etc)

I started out with a black 8×10 picture frame from Walmart, $3. They also have 8.5×11 document frames which would be good too, for a little extra space. On the same aisle, I picked up some picture hanging wire. They sold them in packages of 6′ for $0.97 and I used two.

Since the frame wasn’t real wood, I was a little concerned with how it would turn out once I painted it. I definitely wanted it to have the antiqued look, where you could see the previous color underneath the white paint. I was afraid the only way to do that would be to use a real wood frame, so the wood would soak up the paint and show the grain underneath. I thought this frame, since it was completely flat with no texture, would just produce a flat, solid color when I painted it…

But as you can see from the above images, this little inexpensive frame did great! :) I was very pleased with how it turned out.

I gave the frame a couple coats of paint with this almost-but-not-quite white acrylic paint using the brushes pictured. I used this type of brush because it’s what I had, but I really liked how it turned out because, well, honestly, it didn’t do a very good job! But in a good way! It would wipe away some of the paint as I was trying to paint more, giving it that faded, shabby look. I just painted the frame, I didn’t have to sand it, wipe it, or distress it in any way.

Next, I took a piece of wire and laid it across the back of the frame. I folded it over twice so that I had three strands folded together that were just a little longer than the width of the frame (this was to make the hanging wire a little thicker).

Twist the wires loosely so they hold together, but loose enough so you can stick a post earring through there if you want! :)

On the back of the frame I used a pencil to mark where to hang the wire. I started with 1/4″ from the top opening of the frame, then spaced the remaining wire 2.25″ apart.

Here’s what the back looks like.

I stapled the wire to the frame, then folded and tucked the wire so it wouldn’t come out. If you don’t have a staple gun, you could also use small nails or tacks to wrap the wire around and hold in place.

I gave the knots a few taps with a hammer to make sure there weren’t any sharp wire edges sticking out.

And that’s IT! :) So quick and easy! It looks beautiful on a dresser or chest of drawers.

Let me know if you try it! :) Have fun and thanks for looking! :)

A few weeks ago (after I professed my undying affection for scarves) my lovely and creative blog pal Allie Brownie sent me this super fun link:

Make It and Love it: Knit Scarf

*gasp* … How FUN! An adorable, shabby scarf I could totally make! :) And what a cute site too, huh? I’ve already got several other projects bookmarked that I’m dying to try.

But I had to start with the scarf, of course.

I immediately hit the fabric stores (Hobby Lobby & Hancock are all we have around here) to try and find some cute knit fabric. Unfortunately, I came up with squat. I could not find even remotely cute colors- especially not that adorable green she used!

BUT, I had something else: I had just cleaned out my t-shirt drawer, (it was way overstuffed) and I boxed up a huge stack of old t-shirts that held absolutely no sentimental value anymore. Perfect for re-purposing! I still didn’t have that adorable green, so I went with what I had- lots of orange and blue! :) I had been wanting an Auburn scarf all season to wear to chilly fall football games, so that worked out just fine. And the orange strips of fabric totally look like Tiger stripes! Bonus!

Now, in the tutorial, she calls for one long piece of fabric, 80″ x 6.5″, but since I was using t-shirts and didn’t have one long, single piece, I had to improvise…

Luckily for me, the “destroyed” look is in.

Here’s what mine ended up looking like. I originally didn’t have that blue piece in the middle, but the scarf looked a little short when I tied it on, so I added it at the end, before I had sewn everything together.

Now… I have to admit. I don’t usually enjoy sewing projects. I mean, I can do it, I guess, a little, if it’s really easy …but sewing is not something I particularly enjoy doing in my free time. I don’t see cute stuff and automatically think “Ooh, I could totally make that!” You know? Let’s face it – sewing requires, at the least, patience and attention to detail. I usually end up getting frustrated – the pinning, the stitching, the trimming of all the tiny little threads, the *oof*… ironing…

But this scarf was something I could totally handle! And no ironing required. To be honest… I did have fun making it! Heck- I was giddy! I was flouncing around the house, showing it off to Kevin, and mentioned how it’d be sooooo cute to have the little Auburn AU symbol on the scarf- although that would probably be hard to do. He suggested paw prints. PERFECT! Thanks babe!

I did 4 paw prints total – 2 orange, one on each end of one side of the scarf, and 2 blue on the other- so I could switch colors with my mood – or show one of each!

(P.S. Here’s a rough outline of the pawprint I used, if ya want it! The image should be 4.5″ wide with a resolution of 300 pixels/inch and all you have to do is print it out on a regular 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper for the exact size I used.)

*Cute!*

Annnd I got to proudly show it off at an Auburn baseball game last night. It was so nice to have after the sun went down and the wind picked up. But more on the game later!

This re-purposing t-shirt thing has got me totally inspired. Next I’m going to try this one – sooo shabby and cute, huh? And guess what- it doesn’t require any sewing. No needles. No thread. Sweet!

***

The best thing about this scarf? Besides being adorable, one-of-a-kind, and just for me….

It didn’t cost me a single penny.

I had the t-shirts, the thread, and the sewing machine, just ready to be used!

***

What have you re-purposed lately?? :) Any fun projects you have bookmarked? Share with me – I’d love to see! :)

And I had *just* the project in mind. Several years ago I was browsing through a craft store when I came across printable fabric. Yes, printable fabric you put in your printer and print digital pictures from your computer onto it. I thought, “Well! If anybody needs printable fabric, it’s gotta be me.” I’ve been hoarding this fabric since 2004, waiting for just the right project to come along. And I have to say, this photo rag quilt was *perfect*!!! :)

I have been seeing these super cute rag quilts lately and have been dying to try one! I’ve always wanted to make a quilt (despite my glaring lack of sewing skillz) and these rag quilts looked like something I could handle. I am really *so bad* at sewing, so I always have tons of extra fabric left over from my sewing projects. I checked my stash and I had some really cute patterns leftover from the crate covers and some clothes I made for Miley that all coordinated.

Since I had all my supplies on hand and didn’t even have to go to the store, I decided to start this late on Friday night. By Saturday night, I had this!!

Be sure and check out the rest of the pics (and get the instructions!) by clicking here! :)

This was a fun project, even for a sewing challenged loon like myself! :) While I won’t be opening an Etsy store anytime soon, this probably won’t be the last rag quilt you see from me! ;)

Thanks for looking! :D
