How to Throw the Best S’mores Party

This summer Kevin and I hosted a pool, pizza, and S’mores party every Monday night. It was a wonderful way to extend the weekend and get to know our neighbors. We’d all start to filter in after work, swim and hang out by the pool until sunset, order a pizza from our favorite local pizza joint for dinner, eat off paper plates, and then after dark, we’d head back outside to toast marshmallows around the fire pit.

Setting Up the Perfect S'mores Station

I had so much fun setting up a different “S’mores Station” for us each week. In addition to the standard s’mores fixings, I decided to mix things up and offer options for different kinds of crackers, marshmallows, chocolates and spreads, so everyone could mix and match and make their own unique s’mores creation. S’mores deserve so much more credit than just graham crackers and Hershey’s bars! :) Plus all our neighbors got so into creating their own custom s’more! :) We had way too much fun dreaming up and sharing new flavor combos.

Kevin and I learned a lot over the summer from our weekly s’mores nights, including certain ingredients we knew we had to keep on hand at all times, and what supplies are an absolute must. There were also flavor combinations that stood out above the rest.

Fall is the perfect season for making s’mores, so if you’ve been wanting to to have a S’mores party at your house, I highly recommend it!! :) Here are our best tips and favorite ingredients for throwing the perfect S’mores party.

crackers

Crackers

  • Graham Crackers
  • Ritz Crackers

There are really only two types of crackers I had on hand at all times — Graham Crackers and Ritz Crackers.

Soo, if you’ve never had a s’more with Ritz crackers, it is absolutely a must try!! :) If you think you don’t like s’mores, or you not a huge graham cracker fan (me) you’ve got to try a s’more with Ritz! The buttery-salty-sweet aspect sends s’mores over the top!! :)

I always skip the grahams and head straight for the Ritz when making my s’mores, but I do always keep graham crackers on hand for the traditionalists. But we go through the Ritz three times as fast. Everyone is a convert after they try it! :)

Other options: Girl Scout Cookies. How fun would s’mores be with a marshmallow stuffed between two Thin Mints?? Or Samoas??! Or how about two freshly baked homemade chocolate chip cookies?? Oh dear. I could get in trouble here!!

marshmallows

Marshmallows

I prefer just the original, standard-sized Kraft Jet Puffed Marshmallows. Kevin always requests the Chocolate & Vanilla Swirl variety as well. We tried the designed-for-s’mores Stacker Mallows, but found the size of the marshmallows to be too big for toasting perfection. When the outside was perfectly brown and toasty, the inside was still cold and raw. The outside of the marshmallow would burn before the inside would get melty and gooey. The original Kraft Jet Puffed Marshmallows are still the best when it comes to s’mores!

Other options: How about Chocolate Mint or Brownie Bite marshmallows?? :)

chocolate

Chocolate

  • Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bars
  • Hershey’s Special Dark Chocolate Bars
  • Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups

These were the three chocolates we kept on hand at all times. Every week we’d mix it up with fun novelty chocolate bars we’d find (like Cookies and Cream Hershey Bars, Ghirardelli Dark & Sea Salt Caramel Bars) but these were the three we kept coming back to over and over.

The Reese’s Cups were obviously the most popular! :) There is just something about that salty-melty-gooey chocolate peanut butter combination! :)

The Hershey’s Special Dark was my second favorite. And we always had a plentiful supply of the original Hershey’s Bar for the traditionalists. :)

Other options: Reese’s Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups. I haven’t done this one yet, but I’m dying to try it! I’ve been keeping an eye out for them in the checkout line at the grocery store.

spreads

How to Throw a S'mores Party. Tips for setting up the perfect s'mores station!

Spreads

Oh boy. Here’s where it gets fun!! :) There are so many yummy spreads to choose from! Variety is key here. It’s fun having so many options! :) The ones above were the most popular at our S’mores nights and the ones we put out every week. Most of these can be found in the peanut butter aisle of the grocery store.

Other options: I was always on the lookout for new spreads, like Almond Butter or Cookies and Cream Peanut Butter.

supplies

How to Throw a S'mores Party. Tips for setting up the perfect s'mores station!

Supplies

  • Skewers
  • Plates
  • Napkins
  • Knives
  • Serving Trays
  • Trash bag / trash can

Skewers, obviously. Can’t forget this one!

Plates for each person was a trick we learned a few weeks into S’mores night. We found it worked best to prepare the s’more ahead of time. Choose your cracker, add a spread, top with chocolate, and then it’s all ready for when your marshmallow reaches that perfectly toasted, so gooey it’s about to fall into the fire stage, and you’re not scrambling for a cracker to put it on.

Napkins or paper towels. S’mores are gooey! :)

Lots of knives for all the spreads.

A few servings trays are nice for laying out all the s’mores ingredients like the marshmallows, chocolate, crackers, etc.

A trash bag or trash can close by for all the wrappers and napkins is handy!

The Best S’mores Party Recipe

Out of all the combinations we tried with all the ingredients above, there was one combination that stood out above the rest. One combination that everyone kept coming back to over and over. This is the one that converted our beach friends into s’mores fans after said she never liked s’mores until she tried one like this. And that is the famous Ritz Peanut Butter Cup S’mores.

Ritz Crackers + Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup + Gooey Toasted Marshmallow. Press it together and let it sit for a minute while the hot marshmallow melts the chocolate and peanut butter.

This is what s’mores is all about! :)

S’mores can also easily be made using the broiler of your oven. I actually find it a lot easier to get that perfectly toasted shell using the broiler than a fire! Just lay a sheet of parchment paper over a cookie sheet, add as many or as few marshmallows as you want, and broil on the middle rack (not too close to the broiling element) until it reaches the desired shade of toastiness. (It took about 1 minute in my oven) Then flip to the other side and repeat so both sides are toasty. Remove and immediately place each marshmallow on a prepared s’more.

Other Options for toasting marshmallows:

  • Fireplace
  • Fire pit
  • Campfire
  • Gas Stove burner
  • Candle

My Favorite Cominations

  • Ritz + Reese’s PB Cup + Marshmallow
  • Ritz + Dark Chocolate + Marshmallow
  • Ritz + Dark Chocolate + Salted Caramel Sauce + Marshmallow

These were the three s’mores combos I found myself coming back to over and over. They are definitely my favorites. I can’t get enough of them!! :)

Now I want to hear from you! :) Have you ever made gourmet s’mores? What are some of your favorite s’mores combinations? Do you have a favorite s’mores topping I didn’t list? Let me know in the comments section! :) I am always ready to try new s’mores. :)

Thanks so much for looking! Hope you enjoyed this post. Have an AWESOME s’mores party!! :)

This is incredibly helpful Amanda, thank you! The instructions, detail and photos are awesome. I’ve never been to or had a s’mores party before. In fact, I just officially had my first s’more this Summer. I’m excited to try this for my birthday in the Spring. I suspect a lot of my guests will be first timers so I won’t overwhelm them but I’m definitely considering the classic, dark and reese/ritz combinations. Thanks, again.

  2. Nowhere Girl

Curious. But I don’t think I’ll ever try it because marshmallows contain gelatin… And if there are veggie marshmallows, they are not available here.

Thanks for the great ideas!!! I can’t wait to try the Ritz crackers the next time we make s’mores.

Just a couple more ideas for you…We love using Rolo candies (chocolate/carmel) instead of plain chocolate – we set 2 or 3 on top of the graham cracker then add the roasted marshmallow top it with the other cracker. Delicious!!! Also, we’ve used our gas grill to roast the marshmallows when we were in a time-crunch. I just stuck the skewer in and closed the top. Then I twirled the skewer and checked on it until it was done. It was so much easier than starting a fire in our traditional fire pit & a lot faster. :)

I’ve always wanted to throw a smore’s party!! I would have loved to come to yours. What an amazing spread!!

  5. Mallory @ Total Noms

You have just inspired me to throw a s’mores party in the next weekend or so. I cannot believe how you’ve managed to take something so simple and traditional and completely revitalize it into an awesome party idea! Love the pb cups idea too! Have you ever tried oreos in the middle?

OMG STOP. I just gained ten pounds reading this post… I think the Girl Scout cookie idea is BRILLIANT – Thin Mint S’more’s, are you kidding me?!? But I’ve always wanted to try it with Dove Chocolate and what about Nilla wafers?? I live in an apt. with no outside area, but I’ve totally done marshmallows in my toaster oven… and think I may again soon.

I have one tip for you – instead of using metal skewers, use thin dowel rods. We purchased maybe 1/4 inch (?) dowels at our local Lowe’s (all hardware-type stores should carry them). You can whittle the tip a little, but it’s not necessary. We added some handles to ours, using furniture pieces (like you would have at the top of a chair – finials?) Just glue the handles in place. You could even paint the handles, if you want to be fancy. The wood doesn’t heat up as much so the inside of the marshmallow doesn’t get all melty before the outside is perfectly toasty. My sister-in-law and I and my niece are “professional” marshmallow toasters in our family. I purchased the square mallows this summer and found them to be amazing – the inside didn’t take quite as long to heat up as the regular shaped ones and they fit perfectly on the graham crackers. Although, for ritz, you may want to stick with the regular shapes.
My experiment in flavors has led to a lemon meringue s’more. We love to make lemon mountain pies and I got the idea to spread the lemon curd/pie filling on the graham cracker and add the toasted marshmallow in place of meringue. YUMMY! Haven’t tried it, but you could use lime filling for a key lime pie flavor. Or how about pumpkin pie filling? Chocolate grahams are also good, if you can find them.
    Now I want s’more s’mores…

    1. Larissa

Oh, yeah, I meant to say with the wooden dowel sticks – they don’t get hot, like metal, so you can hold them without burning your fingers and they are longer so you don’t need to get too close to the flames (good for kids!)

  8. Ashley | Spoonful of Flavor

I love the idea of a S’mores party, especially with the cooler weather! I have to admit that I have never tried a s’mores with ritz crackers, but it sounds perfectly sweet and salty.

  9. Coco in the Kitchen

What an absolutely fun party idea.
Ritz crackers make me weak in the knees.
Strange how I haven’t tried them in s’mores…will have to take care of that!

PS-I’m giving away a homemade fall yarn wreath for a very good cause (the Muscular Dystrophy Association). Please spread the word!

This looks like the perfect party to welcome Fall too! Loving the Ritz, dark chocolate and salted caramel combination :)

  11. Yvonne C

I tried your Ritz cracker, Reeses peanut butter and marshmallow combo this summer and LOVED IT! I have converted a lot of my camping friends to this delicious combo as well. Might have to add in some spreads (like Nutella) and try some new combinations!

  12. holly

Have you ever tried campfire cones? We did it last time we went camping, and everyone loved it… You take sugar cones (for ice cream), and fill them with chocolate chips, white chocolate chips (any kind of baking chips, really), mini marshmallows, and other things like brown sugar or spreads, wrap them in aluminum foil, and rotate them over the fire. They’re awesome!

  13. Mary

Wow! I am so hungry for a s’more right now, and it’s only 7:00 am. I always think of s’mores being a summertime treat at the beach. Thanks for all the inspiration! I can’t wait to have a s’more party this weekend.

  14. Lori

Oh. My. Stars!!! My daughter and a couple of her friends are coming from Florida next weekend to see Mama in Alabama!! And now I’ve found the perfect fun thing to do on one of the nights they are here! Thanks, Amanda!!!

  15. Angie | Big Bear's Wife

Oh my! Look at all of those spreads! What a wonderful idea! Love Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups on s’mores too! I’ll have to try them with the Ritz crackers!

  16. Anele @ Success Along the Weigh

Great, now I need a new laptop…I’m literally drooling into the keyboard.

We’re pretty plain when it comes to s’mores (the most adventurous we’ve gotten was nutella spread and dark chocolate using low fat grahams because you know, that totally off sets the calories…HA!). But I must say I’m thinking a party featuring a…wait for it…S’moregasbord for dessert! ;-)

    1. Christi Lynne

I know this comment is almost a year old — but seriously “S’moregasbord” cracked me up so hard just now. Love it.

  17. Danielle

That’s it… I’m moving to your block :D lol. I’ve never tried anything but traditional but I’m now inspired :) yummmmm!
