Escape to Bali {Fairmont Sanur Beach}

When I started telling friends, family, and fellow travelers that I was headed to Australia, especially Western Australia, many of them asked if I was planning on going to Bali afterwards. “Hands down, Bali is my FAVORITE place I’ve ever been!!” they all said emphatically. And, “It’s a super short flight from Perth!” I heard it SO many times, I decided I had to add Bali to the itinerary and check it out for myself. When else would I be that close??

After a whirlwind trip exploring Australia, a quiet, relaxing, meditative atmosphere was just what I needed.

I invited my up-for-anything friend and fellow blogger Julie from Table for Two to join me for a fun girls week in Bali.

Bali is a big island, and we wanted to see as much of it as possible during our short stay. For the first two nights we stayed at the Fairmont in Sanur Beach. Sanur Beach is the quiet, tranquil side of Bali. It’s also the only area in Bali with 5 kilometers of uninterrupted beach — perfect for walking along the coast, swimming, and exploring. Luckily for us, the Fairmont is located right on the beach.

The rooms and villas at the Fairmont are breathtaking. Ours had a living room, dining area, and even its own kitchen.

But our favorite feature of the 2-story villa was the private pool.

Loved laying out here in the sun!

The upstairs bedroom had its own private balcony overlooking the resort.

We spent so much time out here lounging on the comfy cushions, chit-chatting, and raiding the complimentary mini bar!

The rooms were stocked with everything you might need or might have forgotten: all the usual toiletries, plus shower gel, toothbrush, toothpaste, shaving kit, bug spray, and Listerine. There were even American outlets in the bedroom in case you forgot your converter.

You guys. Our villa even had its own MASSAGE room!! How awesome is that?? :) You can book a massage and they will come to your room. I would love this after a full day of exploring Bali!

Relaxing Balinese music (played on the tingkliks pictured above) softly filtered through the air around the resort.

The breakfast buffet in the morning was exceptional! Exotic fruits, freshly baked breads and pastries, freshly pressed juices, an omelet bar and more.

This was seriously breakfast in paradise.

We spent a relaxing morning exploring the resort, then finally dragged ourselves out to the pool for lunch. The fresh fruit smoothies, babi guling burgers, and homemade ice cream were phenomenal. I am still dreaming about that burger!

After lunch we had appointments at the Fairmont Spa for a traditional Balinese massage.

The spa was beautiful. So relaxing. Balinese massages start with a foot bath. This was exactly what I needed after walking around the sandy beach in flip flops all day. And I loved how they had the bowl of sand and seashell art under the massage table! Just in case your eyes opened during the massage, they wanted you to have something beautiful to look at.

We spent the rest of the afternoon lounging by the infinity pool overlooking the ocean.

I loved walking along the beach and immersing ourselves in the Balinese culture.

We stopped for lunch at La Playa, one of the restaurants on the beach near the Fairmont. Loved this huge sampler plate with chicken satay and more.

We stumbled upon a gelato shop and had to try the Passion Fruit and Dragon Fruit sorbet. So refreshing!

If you are ever at the Fairmont in Sanur Beach, you HAVE to get the macarons!! These were a highlight of the trip. They make tropical macarons with all the exotic fruits on the island. All the ingredients are locally grown: Strawberry from the Bedugul region, (a region famous for strawberries in Bali) Coconut, Dragon Fruit, Pineapple, Chocolate, Coffee, Tangerine, and even Pandan. Pandan is a green leaf that tastes like vanilla. Desserts in Bali are commonly infused with pandan. They taste like vanilla and turn out bright green! We saw pandan desserts everywhere from pandan ice cream to pandan creme brulee. If you ever see pandan in Asia or Australia, you HAVE to try it! :)

Hope you enjoyed this small taste of Bali! I’ll be back next week with more from our Bali adventure. We ventured into the heart of Bali and fed and bathed elephants on World Elephant Day. :)

Until next time!! xoxo

Oh my – that’ll teach me to read before lunch … that food looks amazing! My bowl of chicken soup I was planning to have is going to feel lacklustre in comparison!

That sorbet looks just divine too!

I have to say your trips are pretty amazing. Pictures are always awesome. Love your recipes and try them on my family. I can’t imagine having the financial availability to do the things you do. Hotel alone per night is $520. Continued success with your travels. Most of us just have to live vicariously through you, but it is fun to dream.

I have wanted to visit Bali for as long as I can remember. This is the one place in the world that I would love to visit. I have not had a vacation since 1994.

We want to go! My husband and I are planning a big trip out of the country too. Ohh, the places we’ll go! At first we couldn’t decide between Costa Rica and Madagascar. Now you put the thought of Bali into our heads! We work together now for the first time and can finally afford a nice trip.

Feel free to check out what we’re doing.

I lived in Bali for a few years. There is so much to explore in Bali. I hope you ventured outside your hotel and checked out Denpasar, Seminyak, and of course went to Ubud. Lots of things to do in Bali. I’m heading back within 1 week.
